“Driving on speed limit I stopped at a light, car engine went dead. I turned key off and waited a few minutes, turned key on, car started as nothing was wrong. It has happened 3 times in the past year. Battery and alternator are pretty new. Decided to take to an authorized mechanic dealer, couldn't find anything wrong with the engine. Really? What if I was driving in a highway? Certainly I wouldn't be alive to report it!”

NHTSA complaint #11397509, filed 2021-02, 159,000 miles

“Radiator fluid exploded all over engine and floor massive leak . Searched it up on internet and seems this is a common problem with this vehicle . I started vehicle and fluid started going everywhere .I drove maybe 10 feet and shut the car off immediately .”

NHTSA complaint #11327903, filed 2020-06, 36,300 miles

“While trying to stop my vehicle suddenly accelerated and I had to put it in neutral to come to a stop. I pulled into a parking lot and shut the engine off and then started it up again and my engine revved at around 4000 RPM. The only way I could drive the vehicle home was to keep constant heavy pressure on the brakes. It always wanted to accelerate.”

NHTSA complaint #10475348, filed 2012-09, 80,700 miles

“Does the class action lawsuit concerning spark plugs include this model of explorers? The v8 4.6l eddie bauer edition-if not, it should, as we were told the same info on sparks plugs breaking off if not done with a special extraction tool. We had diagnostics done and depending on what happened when removed and changed could cost anywhere between $600-$1500. Specifically told do not attempt yourself. Service was performed june 19, 2014 by a local Ford dealer.”

NHTSA complaint #10871191, filed 2016-05, 98,000 miles

“Just like many others who have reported the same issue with their 2006 Ford Explorer, when backing out of the driveway, I put the vehicle in reverse. There was a jerk as the transmission seemed to finally engage. I thought the trans broke at the time? This has happened more then once. I have also experienced the same issue as others with the delayed shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. My Explorer has just 88k miles on it.”
