“The back up camera has ceased working due to the wiring harness being cut and crimped in the tailgate assembly. It appears to be a example of a poor design that could be a safety issue. The constant opening and closing of the gate and the choice of poor materials does not protect the wiring. I noticed it when attempting to leave a parking lot. Through my research it is a common occurrence on these models.”
NHTSA complaint #11415248, filed 2021-05, 40,512 miles“The rear backup camera that is used every single day has gone completely black. The wire harness that runs from the truck to the tailgate have split due to opening and closing. This is a very common problem that is not the easiest to fix which costs the owners. This will happen to every single 2017-2019 Ridgeline. It is simply caused by opening and closing tailgate in the parked position.”
NHTSA complaint #11413184, filed 2021-04, 75,000 miles“The backup camera went blank. I no longer have a backup camera to safely backup. I found the wires leading to the tailgate are severed due to opening and closing the tailgate. I have 53,000 miles on the truck.”
NHTSA complaint #11476348, filed 2022-07“After reading about this issue I know it's common, however it just happened to me. My backup camera in my 2017 Honda Ridgeline is now black - and sure enough if you open the tailgate you can see exposed wires where there should be black conduit covering them. I am pretty bummed because this is a car I have had about 18 months. I'm sure they will tell me I need a new harness and it will cost me a bundle to fix. Now I am worried that it will just break again after reading all the other complaints about this issue. …”
NHTSA complaint #11428514, filed 2021-08“I own a 2017 Honda Ridgeline and am original owner. Couple of months ago my backup camera went black with only the yellow space image showing on the screen. Went to dealer and they said it was the camera. Made appointment for this repair for $391. After 2 hours they said it wasn't the camera and that the wiring harness in the tailgate was severed and to replace it was $1,641. I said no thanks. In researching online I guess it is a very common problem. You tend to rely on it. There was no warning that it was going to happen. …”
