Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“The front passenger side tire has blown out twice in the past year. The car was parked, and when I started the car and started driving the low tire light came on. After stopping to get air I discovered the tire was completely flat, and I had been driving on a flat tire. Both times the rim was also bent and had to be sent to a shop to repair it (more money and more time away from my car and paying for a rental car). It was the same exact situation both times. I didn't hit anything or run over anything. …”

NHTSA complaint #10817674, filed 2016-01, 57,000 miles

“I purchased a 2013 Hyundai elantra gt with the stock (upgraded as part of Hyundai's 'style' package) 17-inch rims and stock nexen brand 215/45-17 tires on march 2nd, 2015. Only an hour later, the front driver's side tire had a bubble on it from hitting a very small and shallow pothole at a low rate of speed. The following morning, at the same rate of speed the front passenger side tire had a blowout, also after hitting a small, very shallow pothole. The rear tires have no damage as of yet. In only 2 days I will have to have replaced 2 tires. …”

NHTSA complaint #10692164, filed 2015-03, 3,165 miles

“One tire has a bubble in the outer sidewall. Was never hit or damaged in any way. No warranty for tires. This is on the 2013 elantra gt base 16 wheels. Tires also wore out very quickly at 40k.”

NHTSA complaint #10726535, filed 2015-06, 28,000 miles

“I have replaced four tires on this vehicle due to sidewall-related damage. In the first incident (the one detailed in the metadata above), the tire blew out completely, causing the vehicle to lose control. In the other three incidents, sidewall bubbles developed requiring the tire to be replaced. Forums on the internet are listing over 100 customers with this same issue; it seems to be an engineering defect relating to the size of the tire (and its low-profile nature) and the stiffness of the front suspension. …”

NHTSA complaint #10598400, filed 2014-06, 1,868 miles

“Noticed the sidewall of the tire has a bulge on it, did not hit any potholes or anything. Have been reading many are having the same issues with the 17 tires on this car.”
