“We were driving in an interstate when the gas pedal stopped working and we weren't able to go faster than 65mph. A few minutes later, we heard noise from the engine and other drivers were signaling us to move to the shoulder. We found out our car started on fire. According to the tow truck mechanic, the engine blew a rod.”
NHTSA complaint #11204146, filed 2019-04, 106,000 miles“I was driving down interstate i80 20 miles west of lincoln, ne at approximately 80 MPH. I heard a noise from the engine and it locked up immediately, the tachometer dropped to 0 RPM and I lost power steering. This vehicle had already had the recall performed for the known engine locking issue. Without some quick reaction there very easily could have been severe injuries.”
NHTSA complaint #11040270, filed 2017-10, 65,000 miles“Was driving for an hour on the highway and just after I took an exit and was driving about 60km/hr my car shutdown and I had to come to a rolling stop off the side of the road, lights came on the dash, and I was unable to start the car again. Initial thoughts was the alternator as it was a hit day with the A/C full on. Then I had the vehicle towed an hour to a local shop, who informed me that the engine had blown up.”
NHTSA complaint #11234049, filed 2019-07, 82,000 miles“2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport caught fire on 11/20/2018 on rt81n harrisburg, pa. Towed to faulkner Hyundai who says it could take up to 2 months for a Hyundai engineer to get out to assess the problem. Can't understand why a known problem has not created a recall?? They are jeopardizing customers lives. We were driving when we heard noise, pulled off and saw smoke coming out. My husband used water to put it out.”
NHTSA complaint #11153613, filed 2018-11, 66,000 miles“This car was included in the recall of over 1.5 million hyujdai and kia vehicles due to a factory defect that can lead to premature engine failure. This car broke down on april 28th, 2019. I am having it towed to the Hyundai dealership for diagnosis. The what to look for section on Hyundai's websites lists a number of symptoms of this recall issue and what I experienced when my car left me stranded along the highway is exactly what is described on the Hyundai website. …”
