“My 2004 Hyundai Sonata has been having clutch and flywheel problems starting at less than 10,000 miles. It is now at 40,000 miles and it's getting worse. I've had mechanics (not biased Hyundai personal) tell me that the fly wheel is most likely warped, causing the clutch to shimmy and slip under load (up hills with passengers, etc). I had the dealer look at it and they said it was fine . I'm thinking about taking it to another dealership.”

NHTSA complaint #10153539, filed 2006-03, 10,000 miles

“I operate a 2004 Hyundai Sonata. It equipped with shiftronic feature, where you able to overdrive a regular automatic transmission by manually switching to desired gear. However, it has own logic not to allow you to switch to inappropriate gear leading to overstress and/or damage engine or transmission. While driving on slippery road I used above mentioned feature to slow down a car when approaching an intersection (so-called engine brake). At same time I used regular brakes too since engine brake is not so effective and it can't stop the car completely. …”

NHTSA complaint #10252179, filed 2008-12, 22,000 miles

“Suspension failure july 2016-both engine mounts and lower control arms failed. Replaced 2016 july. April 2017 both engine mounts and lower control arms failed again. In addition violent jerking while driving, then loss of power. Usually occurred going up hills, coming off from making a turn or driving speeds under 25mph.brake lights remain on unable to indicate stopping to other cars.unable to safely drive and maneuver the vehicle. Brake lights remain on whether driving or in park. …”

NHTSA complaint #10981531, filed 2017-04, 127,949 miles

“The car was parked in a residential parking area. It had been backed into the space. After starting the car and putting the transmission in drive, the car accelerated uncontrollably. This occurred so quickly the driver was unable to control the vehicle. Brakes did not stop the vehicle. It appeared that the accelerator was stuck. The vehicle hit a car in the next row of cars. Because of rain, the car then skidded 180 degrees and struck two cars in the same line of cars from which it had departed. …”

NHTSA complaint #10594042, filed 2014-05, 98,000 miles

“Hyundai Sonata, 5 speed, 2005, 4 cylinder, 47,500 miles, approximately 4 years old. There was a lot of play in the clutch, but it still engaged. Once engaged however, the vehicle was slow to build up speed. Took it to key Hyundai, the dealer where it was purchased. Was immediately told that their 5 year, 60,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty would not be in effect because this was due to normal wear-and-tear. They never dropped the transmission to look at the internals. They gave me the choice of $1,100 for repairs, and $2,500 if a new flywheel was needed. …”
