“While parked in the driveway, and after being driven for an hour, vehicle inadvertently caught on fire above the manifold. The fire smoldered and put itself out. Owner contacted the manufacturer, who sent an engineer to investigate. Owner was also told by the manufacturer that there was nothing they could do, and advised the owner to seek legal council. The technician replaced the cruise control cable, accelerator cable and hood latch cable.”

NHTSA complaint #10115451, filed 2005-04, 95,000 miles

“Erratic, intermittent instrumentation cluster, failure (shut-down) while driving, including speedometer, oil pressure gauge, amp gauge, temperature gauge, odometer, gas gauge and tachometer gauge. Isolated occurrences without warning made it difficult to explain. Because of safety concerns this equipment failure as noted in company service bulletins (081599) should have been reported to the vehicle owners and repaired at chrysler expense.”

NHTSA complaint #10025741, filed 2003-07, 32,000 miles

“While down shifting to second gear at 40 MPH, the engine accelerated at a higher rate. The consumer pulled over and had the vehicle towed. The consumer had taken the vehicle to a private mechanic and did not plan on contacting the Jeep dealership about the problem. The cause was not determined. The vehicle was slowed down when the engine started revving, it was then switched to a lower gear and proceeded, then was placed back into drive in which it was slowed down and the engine started revving again in a lower gear but did not work. …”

NHTSA complaint #10067088, filed 2004-06, 64,000 miles

“Crash - I rear ended another vehicle in my 1999 Jeep Cherokee sport. I was braking when the car suddenly accelerated, driving me into the vehicle in front of me. This has happened before, but only this time did it result in an accident. I took it to a certified Jeep dealership and had the service department check it out. They said nothing is wrong with it. I am pretty nervous about this. I know how hard I was braking, and it just didn't matter. The car was working against me. I had to throw it into park just to stop the car.”

NHTSA complaint #10074845, filed 2004-06

“Vehicle was involed in sudden acceleration while drivingon hwy at approximately 55 MPH. As soon as driver lifted foot off brake pedal, vehicle suddenly took off out of control, hit a parked vehicle before stopping. Upon impact, both air bags failed to deploy. Dealer notified. Can NHTSA help in this matter.”
