What owners report

Owners of this model year most often describe fuel-system trouble after refueling: hard starting, stalling, and fuel spitting back from the filler. A second common theme is the airbag warning light staying on, which owners link to seat belt buckles and sensors, plus rear subframe and cross member corrosion reported at higher mileages.

  1. Air bags

    Airbag warning light stays on

    • 12 complaints (18%)
    • median 90,000 mi at 10.0 yrs old (8 state mileage, few)
    • 4 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2006–2023

Owners report the airbag warning light coming on and remaining lit, sometimes intermittently, with no crash involved. In several complaints a mechanic traced it to a failed seat belt buckle or seat belt sensor, and some were quoted for a buckle replacement. A few owners describe side or curtain airbags not deploying in a collision, though those accounts differ in detail. Appears across a wide mileage range, often reported between roughly 75,000 and 130,000 miles.

What to check: With the ignition on, confirm the airbag light goes out after the bulb check; if it stays lit, ask for the stored airbag fault codes and a quote for the seat belt buckle or sensor before buying.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“My airbag light went on july 16 2016. I took the car to sussman Kia in jenkintown pa.to check light. I was told it is a faulty seat belt .the air bag may not deploy properly. I was told to replace the seat bely assembly $715.25. The work order invoice #52875--20 july 2016.should this not be a recall item for safety by Kia motors?”

    NHTSA complaint #10887930, filed 2016-07, 107,900 miles

“Air bag light stays on! Took the car to my mechanic to fix it for $72, and only two weeks later, the light went on again. I was told to pull on and jiggle the passengers seat belt to make it go off, however, that doesn't work. Do I want to spend another $72 to fix it ? The cost to replace the sensor would be approximately $435. When the air bag light is illuminated, the big risk is that the air bags will not respond in an accident.”

    NHTSA complaint #10537630, filed 2013-08, 91,000 miles
  2. Fuel system

Hard start, stall or fuel spit-back after refueling

    • 13 complaints (19%)
    • median 60,000 mi at 7.5 yrs old (11 state mileage)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2005–2021

Complaints describe the engine stalling or being difficult to restart after the tank is filled, and fuel spitting back out of the filler neck or the pump clicking off as if the tank were full. Some owners say the problem clears until the next refill; others report stalling while coming to a stop. Independent mechanics in the complaints point to a faulty fuel sensor/overflow valve or fuel in the charcoal canister, and some owners connect the symptom to the fuel tank recall. Reported from a few thousand miles up to well over 150,000 miles, usually tied to filling the tank.

    Recall 05V2120001 related service bulletin

What to check: Fill the tank during a test drive and check for hard starting, fuel smell, or spillage at the filler; ask whether the fuel tank recall work was actually completed and keep the paperwork.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“My Kia Sportage.... Stalled in mid traffic like it losses power right after I. Put gasoline in the car, almost making me loose control and get in a wreck. It is not getting fuel .after I continued to try and refuel it. I noticed a recall online about my vehicle nut dealer is only sayinh the recall is on a fuel strap ti hold the fuel tank up I need this safely repaired”

    NHTSA complaint #11405152, filed 2021-03, 165,000 miles

“When gas tank is filled, gas leaks out of pipe leading to gas tank. Which in my opinion could cause a fire and/or explosion. Car is currently at the dealer to correct the problem.”

    NHTSA complaint #10118253, filed 2005-04, 1,500 miles
  3. Body and structure

Rear subframe and cross member corrosion

    • 10 complaints (15%)
    • median 123,500 mi at 12.3 yrs old (8 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2013–2022

Complaints describe heavy rust and perforation of the rear subframe, cross member and underbody, often found during inspection or an unrelated repair. Several owners say a mechanic or dealer told them the vehicle was not safe to drive because the rear suspension mounting could separate. Some attribute it to road salt; a few note the corrosion was found at high mileage on otherwise maintained vehicles. Mostly reported above roughly 105,000 miles, and several owners mention winter road salt.

    5 related service bulletins

What to check: Get underneath or pay for a pre-purchase inspection focused on the rear subframe, cross member and floor; ask whether the anti-corrosion underbody campaign was ever applied.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“The clutch went out on our Kia Sportage and when we had it at the auto mechanic, he told us, the frame was so rusty it was a major safety issue. We were alarmed to hear this considering we used this car to transport our grandchildren sometimes and thought about would could have happened. Currently we do not even want the clutch repaired as we have been told not to consider even driving it unless the frame sub rails/floor are replaced. I have since read other reviews and have found similar alarming concerns. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11100004, filed 2018-06, 106,000 miles

“The rear cross member that holds rear tie rods and rear connecting arms to wheels is rusted so bad it will fail. My employer has same year same model but in hyundai hers is the same and drivers side rear just snapped hike driving it's the exact same part and rusted so bad wheel collapsed. This is why I checked mine. Bottom line main suspension component on Kia and hyundai shortage or dante fe fail at 10 years. There are as a recall to undercoat or replace parts under the car do to early rust failure. This was 6 years ago. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10924114, filed 2016-11, 126,000 miles
  4. Electrical system

Stalling and rough running at stops or low speed

    • 12 complaints (18%)
    • median 38,500 mi at 5.6 yrs old (8 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2006–2023

Owners describe the engine cutting out without warning when slowing for a light, turning, or parking, sometimes restarting right away and sometimes not. Some also report the idle hunting or the engine revving on its own with the air conditioning on. Dealers in the complaints often could not reproduce the problem, and a few reprogrammed the computer without a lasting fix. Reported from a few thousand miles to over 100,000 miles, typically at low speed or while stopping.

    1 related service bulletin

What to check: Drive the car through several stops and a turn at low speed, and ask whether any engine computer updates or stall-related repairs have been done.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“While finding a parking spot my vehicle lost power and suddenly quit. After restarting it, I found a parking spot and just before the vehicle was put in park, it stalled again. Apon leaving to go home, a 10 mile trip, each time I came to a stop the vehicle stalled on me an additional 5 times. This is not the first intance of this problem. We have had this vehicle in the shop previously four other times. Each time saying that it was due to a loose air intake valve. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10201300, filed 2007-08

“Vehicle started to shift improperly and the engine revved itself while in park with the air conditioning on. A week or so later, car lost power while trying to park without warning. Taken to the dealership who found nothing wrong using the computer. Car continued to do this for over a month, with no pattern, taken back to the dealership who once again gave the vehicle back and said there is nothing wrong. I find this to be a serious problem since it turns off while stopping and or turning.”

    NHTSA complaint #10197495, filed 2007-07, 26,000 miles
  5. Steering

Electronic stability program engaging on its own

    • 8 complaints (12%)
    • median 85,000 mi at 5.5 yrs old (7 state mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2005–2023

Complaints describe the stability program light coming on and a single brake engaging by itself during normal driving, which pulls the vehicle toward one side. Some owners report the repair was done under the stability control recall, while others say their vehicle was not covered. A few mention the warning light returning after a sensor or computer update. Reported from very low mileage up to around 90,000 miles, during ordinary driving.

    Recall 05V120000

What to check: Ask whether the yaw rate sensor recall was performed and check that the stability program light behaves normally on a test drive, including during steady braking.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“My ESP button stays on and including the air bag light and I've tried everything trying to turn it off as well as my engine light and my hard parking brake which keeps turning on and won't turn off while driving and it feels harder to press the gas and I lost complete control on the freeway some how but I believe its due to my ESP button, idk much about cars so this is the best way I can describe it, not many cars around on the freeway but I would've died if there was.. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11555961, filed 2023-11

“Continous failures in the electronic stability program (eps) that causes periodic braking during normal driving conditions. Failure causes car to pull in the direction of braking wheel, often causing the car to enter other lanes of traffic. At this point, only the electronic sensor has been replaced, which has not corrected problem.”

    NHTSA complaint #10121973, filed 2005-05, 3,000 miles

Buying note. This is an older model year, so condition matters more than the complaint list: have any candidate inspected underneath for rear subframe corrosion and confirm the fuel tank and stability control recall work was completed. A filled tank, a cold start and a low-speed stop are the quickest checks for the two most common symptoms.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? NHTSA complaint #10457441, filed 2012-05, 89,000 miles

Air bags: “On 10/16/08 at approx. 7:20a I was t-boned in the drivers side door and back passenger door by a ford f250 red pickup truck as I was traveling up the street doing about 35-40 MPH. He was pulling out of his subdivision onto the street and his passenger side window was fogged up so he did not see me coming.”

NHTSA complaint #10245644, filed 2008-10, 52,903 miles

Electrical system: “The contact stated the vehicle intermittently stalled at various speeds without warning. After each incident, the vehicle restarted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they were unable to determine the cause of the problem. The computer was reprogrammed, but the problem persisted.”

NHTSA complaint #10168564, filed 2006-09, 9,000 miles

Body and structure: “I was involved in 2 low impact crashes with this Kia Sportage 2005 model. One was a rear end collision at 20 MPH and the other I was hit from the side in a parking lot. Both times the other driver drove away without damage. I suffered 3500 dollars worth of damage from the first incident and 7500 from the second. The vehicle was not drivable both times. Airbags never deployed. I am very concerned as are other individuals who witnessed the incidents that if the speed had been any greater the personal injury would have been great. …”
