Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“Spark plugs failed. As a result, vehicle jerked forward without warning. Coolant leaked twice in the past. The radiator assembly was reinstalled. The left front window squeaked. The trim on the front door panel was removed and reinstalled. The engine light had come on and the engine had run rough. The service dealer replaced the faulty coil pack on the #4 cylinder. The heater hose was replaced due to leakage. The heater did not blow air and displayed a burning smell.”

NHTSA complaint #10055560, filed 2004-03, 100,000 miles

“The windshield wipers come on and off intermittently without being switched on/off. They seem to have a mind of their own. The rear wiper does not come on at all most times, even when turned on. Also, the odometer lcd readout comes on and off intermittently. Several light on the dash controls panels come on and off at will as well. It just seems that there is several problems with the wiring systems or possibly in the computer. However, since it only does it intermittantly you cannot plan to check it with the dealer, because there is no telling when it will occur and how long it will last.”

NHTSA complaint #10026027, filed 2003-07, 60,000 miles

“Front wipers come on at any time. Dealer has been informed by manufacturer that they are aware of problem and the manufacturer has directed dealers not to work on problem until a fix has been identified. I was blinded by smeared bugs & dust at night leading me to have to stop on the freeway at night to clean.”

NHTSA complaint #709054, filed 1999-07

“Wipers come on intermittently dealer has replaced multifunction switch which worked for about a month and now it is malfunctioning again. Dealer will not do anything else since they cannot get the wipers to malfunction. My concern is fire since this is in the wiring it is possible that the car might set on fire. Dealer sees no concern even with the other Lincoln recalls due to fire.”

NHTSA complaint #709921, filed 1999-08

“Windshield wipers are coming on/off intermittently. Contacted dealer on june 3, and was told they had no correction piece for this problem. Took the vehicle again on 7 jun 99, they were in the process of updating the gem module and waiting. Consumer currentlywaiting on the part.”
