“The 1994 Mazda 626lx with a v-6 2.5l motor has required 3 transmissions in the 8 years I have owned the car. The water pump went out twice and the alternator twice as well. This last time the transmission failed, I was on I-5 heading north near the los banos turnoff when it just started slipping and came to a complete stop on the freeway. I am very frustrated with the design and longevity of many parts of this vehicle.”

NHTSA complaint #10361472, filed 2010-10, 138,000 miles

“The spark plug wires and distributor cap have failed 2 times since I have owned this car. I have noticed that this is a reoccuring problem in a number of 94 Mazda 626. Can anything be done? The repair cost for the last time was approximately $1000 at rosenthal Mazda. I was quoted a price of approx. $350 for the distributor cap.”

NHTSA complaint #742521, filed 2001-03

“The hold light on the instrument cluster began to blink this morning. Now the transmission shifts very roughly - like a performance transmission... Basically crash, bang, screech. I've checked several websites, and have seen reports that this particular transmission has seen this problem commonly. So far Mazda has not issued a recall, I think it's about time they consider it. This is still a low mileage car!!!!”

NHTSA complaint #766657, filed 2002-09

“I was driving to work. Smoke started coming from under the dash board. The car cut off. I got out of the car, raised the hood. The wire that comes out of the dash board was red. About 20 seconds later, smoke consume the car and the dash board was on fire. The inside of the car was burned. From the dash board to the trunk. The fire report said it was electrial problem.”

NHTSA complaint #709277, filed 1999-07

“While traveling at highway speed of 60 MPH, vehicle lost power. Consumer was able to get vehicle to an independent repair shop. Consumer was informed that the distributor needed to be replaced. Manufacturer notified, and informed consumer that part was not covered under manufacturer's recall.”
