“I bought my 94 Mitsubishi Galant in december of 1998. The first time my alternator belt broke was august of 1999. Since then my belt has been replaced 12 times (7 times the belt was replaced by a mechanic). Most of the time, my husband or myself have been driving when the belt brakes leaving us stranded on the side of the road. The belt also squeaks really bad. I've tried to get this problem fixed, but no one seems to know what is causing it to squeak. I've had alternator's replaced, belts replaced, and the pulley adjusted. None of it worked, but I still had to pay for it. Please help me.”

NHTSA complaint #10107968, filed 2005-01, 70,000 miles

“The harmonic balancer suddendly broke one day as I was driving to work.the Mitsubishi dealer said that it seemed to be a very commom occurance and complaint and therefore had many parts in stock. Seems to me that if they have to stock a lot of these parts then maybe a better look at the manufacturing of them should be taken.”

NHTSA complaint #10023823, filed 2003-06

“This is the 3rd time the harmonic balancer has broken and caused the lower pulley to become disengaged from the engine causing a loss of engine power. Dealers & service stations identify this as a common problem but the manufacturer does not identify it and has no record of how many times this has occured. The manufacturer refuses to cover the cost of repair.”

NHTSA complaint #760612, filed 2002-04

“Consumer was pulling out of driveway and heard a poppying noise/ smelled smoke. Her husband looked underneath vehicle and noticed that belt had popped out. She drove vehicle to dealership, and mechanic told her that pulley/crankshaft came apart. They replaced the part, then one week later the same problem happened again. Currently, she heared a pingging noise.”

NHTSA complaint #869135, filed 2000-08

“Engine pulley: crankshaft;the outer ring which holds the alternator and air conditioner belt has separated, causing the belt to come off, resulting in ring flying around freely, and causing a very loud noise. Consumer has contacted dealer. Please provide any further details.”
