Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“I have seen on certain chrysler models, especially minivans, with the 2-pin floating caliper design that the surface of the steering knuckle where the brake pads ride wears away and can cause the affected wheel to lock up either during a stop or after the brake pedal is released. This is caused by the brake pads wedging in the groove. If this were to happen during a brake application, the vehicle could veer into oncoming traffic, causing an accident. I have also noticed that the mounting design (ie: bolts and slide pins,) is flawed. …”

NHTSA complaint #10402256, filed 2011-05, 100,000 miles

“Dt: the contact complained about brake problems. There have been three accidents as a result of the brakes not completely stopping the vehicle. When applying the brakes the vehicle lurched forward. The vehicle has not been inspected to determine the cause of the brake problems.”

NHTSA complaint #10140334, filed 2005-10, 1,800 miles

“I have had the brakes worked on 4 different occasions now. Continual loss of brake fluid. When making a left hand turn brake light will come on. Master cylinder has been replaced all brake shoes have been replace, along with calipers. Two weeks passed and brake light starting to come on again, and there was fluid loss. Took van back in approx 3 weeks ago to be worked on, and brake light is now coming on again, and staying on longer each time.”

NHTSA complaint #10088428, filed 2004-08, 32,000 miles

“When applying brakes in a sudden/emergency stop vehicle experienced extended stopping distance. Vehicle had been to dealer on three occasions, and they were unable to duplicate the problem.”

NHTSA complaint #10101942, filed 2004-12, 27,000 miles

“While driving 72 MPH, the driver's seat back collapsed backward, almost hitting the floor, because both rear seats were removed to carry cargo. The driver barely kept a grip on the steering and pulled himself up and was able to maintain control of the van. The driver removed the side panel of the seat and noticed that a plastic piece inside the panel had broke. The dealership has been contacted. The cause of piece breaking has yet to determined. The following day when the emergency parking brakes was disengaged, the lever broke off in the consumer's hand.”
