“Pontiac released a recall of 1997-? Grand prix's due to a severe engine oil leak that can cause the car to catch fire. We have a 1995 Grand Prix with a 3.1l engine that has a severe oil leak also. The leak has been diagnosed from the lower intake manifold gasket with a $1000 repair estimate. I believe the engine is almost identical to the ones used in 1997-? Model years. Pontiac should include all Grand Prix's with this engine in their recall!”

NHTSA complaint #10222560, filed 2008-03, 150,000 miles

“Intake manifold gasket went out on 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix. Car was in rush hour traffic when the gasket went; causing the oil to quickly leak from the engine and leaving car inoperable in traffic. Did not realize this was happening until car smelled of oil and smoke started coming from under the hood. It created quite a dangerous situation in the middle of the roadway. No prior warning of failure was evident. Car was towed to repair facility where both intake manifold gaskets were replaced. Very labor-intensive and very expensive repairs. …”

NHTSA complaint #10107923, filed 2005-01, 96,500 miles

“Oil loss not remedied, repeated attempts by dealer. After 6 months of attempts to rectify problem a technical bulletin on how to repair problem was found by dealer. Bulletin issued in 1997. Work done but problem continues. No signs of oil leakage or burning now or prior to repairs. Loss has been as much as 4 quarts in 3000 miles”

NHTSA complaint #729400, filed 2000-08

“Oil loss uncorrected by dealer after 4 or more attempts. Technical bulletin from Pontiac finally found by dealer after 6 months of oil monitoring etc. Replaced pcv, valve cover assembly and harness due to supposed clean burning of oil per bulletin. Problem still not corrected.”

NHTSA complaint #729397, filed 2000-08

“Engine/piston is scuffing. Engine cylinder wall wears out faster, and the vehicle uses more oil. The dealer's service department is aware of the problem, and is trying to contact the field service to replace the engine.”

NHTSA complaint #824136, filed 1998-06
