What owners report
Owners of this model year most often describe lighting failures — headlights that go dim or quit, rear bulbs and sockets that keep failing — along with electrical problems such as wiring harness corrosion, erratic gauges and intermittent stalling. Many of these reports cluster at low mileage, and brake complaints (pulsation, warped or grinding rotors) recur at very low mileage as well.
- Electrical system
Headlights dim or quit; harness and connector corrosion
- 18 complaints (25%)
- median 25,000 mi at 4.5 yrs old (13 state mileage)
- filed 2004–2010
Complaints describe low beams suddenly going dark or dropping to a faint glow while driving at night, sometimes with dash lights dimming at the same time. Owners report that replacing bulbs and the multifunction switch did not restore the lights, and that dealers traced the trouble to corroded or failed wiring in the forward harness, wrapping or rerouting it. Several owners say the same failure returned after each repair. Reports span roughly 3,000 to 60,000 miles, with several recurring on a yearly basis and some tied to wet or damp conditions.
What to check: Test every lighting function at night and inspect the forward headlamp harness and connectors for corrosion, taping or splice repairs; ask whether the harness has already been replaced.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“Having numerous problems with the headlights. Started with dim lights then to no low beams, and now only one high beam. By researching on the internet I am certainly not the only one who has had the same problems with very expensive repairs. This to me seems like a very dangerous problem. Maybe no one was killed as a result ,but how many would have to for a recall to fix this problem. I think Pontiac needs to address this issue with a recall.”
NHTSA complaint #10186237, filed 2007-03, 60,000 miles“Low beam headlights quit working. The bulbs tested fine, the fuse tested fine and the multifunction switch seems to be working properly. I replaced the switch with a known working switch and the low beams still do not work. I drive when it is dark outside and am forced to use my high beams to see and make sure that I am seen by other drivers. I talked to the dealership and they suggested replacing the multifunction switch which I did and the low beam lights still do not work.”
NHTSA complaint #10213815, filed 2008-01, 25,000 miles - Exterior lighting
Rear bulb and socket failures (stop, turn, tail lamps)
- 17 complaints (24%)
- median 7,589 mi at 1.3 yrs old (10 state mileage)
- 2 mention a crash, fire or injury
- filed 2003–2008
Owners describe rear turn signal and brake bulbs burning out repeatedly, in some cases within hours or on a weekly basis, and one report describes a melted bulb and a socket that showed signs of heat. Dealers replaced bulbs or socket assemblies, and complaints note that the work under the rear lamp recall did not always end the repeat failures. Another owner found the turn signals and brake lights inoperative on several occasions. Mostly reported under about 20,000 miles, with some repeat failures continuing for years.
What to check: Ask whether the rear lamp socket recall (04V524000) was completed, then check that both stop and turn lamps work and inspect sockets for melting or corrosion.

“2003 Pontiac Sunfire - rear blinker bulds keep burning out. My wife was involved in a rear end collision and I've almost been in several accidents where the driver behind me almost rear ended me. I've been pulled over about 6 times since I bought the car but luckily not written up. I called the dealer but they told me to just keep replacing the bulbs. The bulbs cost around $2.00 and they burn out within 2 hours. I've tried different types of bulbs but none work.”

NHTSA complaint #10223430, filed 2008-04 - Engine cooling
Intermittent stalling and no-start
- 10 complaints (14%)
- median 28,000 mi at 2.0 yrs old (10 state mileage)
- filed 2003–2014
Owners describe the engine cutting out without warning while driving at highway or city speeds, sometimes restarting after a wait of minutes and sometimes not restarting at all. Complaints mention repeated dealer visits with the problem not duplicated, and one owner says another dealer pointed to an earlier service bulletin on the subject. A few owners link the shutdown to a stall that also kills lights and gauges. Reports range from very low mileage (under 7,000 miles) into the 80,000-mile range, with several occurring in the first two years of ownership.
What to check: Ask for service history on any stalling or no-start diagnosis, and note whether the crank sensor, ignition switch or fuel delivery has been addressed; a long test drive including a shut-off and restart is worth doing.

“I purchased the car in october 2003 and the car was great. In march 2006 I started having problems where the car when attempted to start would take a few seconds extra and then start, then 6 months later I was driving down the street and the car just cut off in the middle of an intersection. The car restarted about 10 minutes later. Then in november this started happening more an more frequently. One night in december the car cut off and would not restart at all. I was able to pull of the road. …”
NHTSA complaint #10204414, filed 2007-09, 80,000 miles“Was driving on the freeway, traveling at 70 MPH and all of the lights both dash and exterior went out and the engine stopped. Pulled to the side of the highway and tried to restart the car, no luck. Waited for 30 minutes and tried to restart it and it started up, but when I got up to 40mph, it repeated what it did before, pulled to the side of the road and waited another 15 minutes and it started again, and it did it again. Again I pulled to the side of the road and waited, then it started, and I finally got it to an exit off of the highway. …”
NHTSA complaint #10124992, filed 2005-06, 42,000 miles - Brakes
Brake pulsation and rotor wear at low mileage
- 5 complaints (7%)
- median 11,681 mi at 1.2 yrs old (3 state mileage, few)
- filed 2003–2005
Complaints describe vibration or a grab-and-release pulsation through the brake pedal or steering wheel when braking, which owners attribute to warped or worn front rotors. Dealers commonly resurfaced the rotors or replaced pads, and several owners say the symptom returned within a few thousand miles; one owner reported grinding brakes after repeated service. Reported from under 1,000 miles up to about 16,000 miles, suggesting it appears early in the vehicle's life.
What to check: Brake firmly from highway speed during the test drive and feel for pulsation; ask for brake service records and whether rotors were resurfaced or replaced.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“Brake rotors warped after less than 11,000 miles of travel; 2003 Pontiac-Sunfire purchased on april 29, 2003. I believe that this is a bad batch of brake parts or the component is either under designed or improperly specified to withstand day-to-day city driving conditions. A 2001 chevrolet-cavalier that I previously owned exhibited the same insufficiency in it's brake rotors that required servicing three times in 60,000 miles of driving. Both of these cars are essentially the same with the exception of trims and GM division name. …”
NHTSA complaint #10037291, filed 2003-09, 11,681 miles“The brakes on my 2003 Sunfire have been serviced 4 times. The first time they were grinding and I was tol dnothing was wrong. Then 3,000 miles later I was back in the shop and the breaks were ground. That worked for a little while but no sooner was I back in the shop and the breaks were completely changed. Well its been less then 4,000 miles since that was done and the breaks are starting to grind again.”
NHTSA complaint #10086837, filed 2004-08 - Electrical system
Erratic or dead instrument cluster gauges
- 7 complaints (10%)
- median 60,000 mi at 5.0 yrs old (4 state mileage, few)
- filed 2003–2013
Complaints describe speedometer, fuel and temperature gauges that jump, read wrong or stop working entirely, sometimes after the car warms up or in hot weather. Owners report the instrument cluster as the diagnosed cause in some cases, and one owner notes the gauges went erratic alongside other electrical symptoms such as battery and airbag lights. Typically reported between about 50,000 and 100,000 miles, with some owners noting the behavior in warm weather.
What to check: Watch the gauges through a warm-up and a road test, including the speedometer at steady speed; ask whether the cluster or its connections have been repaired or replaced.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“I have been driving a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire since 2008. My family bought it brand new with only 27 miles on it. Every winter when it is really cold, the temperature gauge would not always reset itself after the car was turned off. This would result in the fuel gauge going all over the place but eventually it would reset itself. However, in september of 2012, all of my gauges on my dash went all over the place. My temperature gauge has since spun completely around and is stuck on the plastic from the dash. …”
NHTSA complaint #10495323, filed 2013-01, 100,000 miles“I have had alot of shortages on my 2003 Pontiac Sunfire. I have been researching on line and there have been alot of similar issues. Such as power window shortages, high beam and low beam shortages, the locks, and issues with the dashboard gauges not working. I feel that this is to many issues with shortages and it is a safety issue.”
NHTSA complaint #10254471, filed 2009-01
Buying note. Check the lighting system carefully — front harness condition and rear lamp sockets — and brake for pulsation on the test drive, since those are the most frequently reported areas. Service records showing prior electrical and brake work are worth reviewing on any used example.
Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? Exterior lighting: “Referring to the passenger-side headlight: while driving my children home after it was already dark, I noticed that the passenger-side headlight seemed a little dimmer than the driver-side headlight. I also had on my driving lights that are below the headlights. We were on a particularly dark road where there is a tendency to be deer, so when it was clear of opposing traffic, I put the high-beam lights on. After putting the high-beams on, all the lights.....headlights, high-beams, and driving lights went out....while I was driving. A red service light came on the dashboard. …”
