“Having maintained my Subaru Outback at a Subaru dealer since purchase, I expected few major problems. Over the last few months, a small buzzing sound from the transmission has grown to a loud sound. The Subaru tech said my transmission was done. 133000 miles and Subaru offered $1000 toward a new car or new $8000 transmission. The car is now worthless.”

NHTSA complaint #11258542, filed 2019-09, 130,000 miles

“Heard some noise coming from the car and brought it to Subaru. They told me I needed a new transmission for $9,000. I checked online and found this type of transmission has had numerous problems. I only have 129,000 miles on the car. I service it regularly as I have done all my vehicles in my lifetime. I have never replace a transmission on any car I owed in the +50 years of purchasing cars.”

NHTSA complaint #11328163, filed 2020-06, 129,000 miles

“Issue is ongoing for the last 6 months. Vehicle intermittently stalls when at idle and placed in gear. Hesitation when accelerating while driving (acts as if it not getting enough power.) I have taken the vehicle to 3 different dealerships and contacted Subaru of america and I am not getting anywhere. Dealerships can't duplicate the problem, so therefore can't diagnose the problem. I have video records of this issue occurring.”

NHTSA complaint #11189965, filed 2019-03, 93,000 miles

“We have owned the vehicle for about a year. A few weeks ago the transmission started making a horrendous noise and the car is now a very expensive lawn ornament. I have heard from a mechanic friend that the Subaru CVT transmissions are known to have issues. My husband had just picked up our kids from daycare and when he went to leave the car didn't want to go in gear and made a grinding noise that it continued to make. We parked it to prevent further damage.”

NHTSA complaint #11120735, filed 2018-08, 102,000 miles

“This vehicle has several issues. I had an oil change and within 1 week they had to add 1.3 quarts. Car had 23,767 miles. In just over a month I have had to add almost 4 quarts of synthetic oil and spent close to $100 for the oil. The car is an automatic with a manual option and I am also haveing problems where the gears won't change in auto nor manual operation. It revs the engine and I have to stop, turn it off then restart. …”
