“I have loved my Toyota solara except for one major issue. A few years ago the dashboard became sticky and gummy. Everything sticks to it and it is very soft to the touch. It is totally melting and the dashboard has changed to a shiny surface. The bright and shiny dashboard creates a huge glare on the windshield right in my line of vision. Lastly, the dashboard has begun cracking...first crack appeared between the audio/radio system and the glove box a few weeks ago.”
NHTSA complaint #10629916, filed 2014-09, 48,500 miles“The dashboard in my solara started to melt under the sun. My vehicle is garage kept and is maintained properly. The dash shows nicks if you hit it with something like a fingernail. I contacted Toyota as I had the dash replaced and my dealer wrote the problem was material defect. I had to pay the labor of over $400 as my dealer absorbed the cost of the dash. Toyota brushed me off and refused to even pay half the cost. This is a serious problem and we the customer shouldn't have to pay for a mistake by Toyota. …”
NHTSA complaint #10669878, filed 2015-01, 45,000 miles“This past year the dashboard began to get very sticky and started cracking in various areas. I took the car to earl stewart Toyota in lake park, fl. And they advised that the car was no longer under warranty and they could do nothing. I checked online and found numerous other Toyota owners with the same problem. I contacted Toyota corporate and they initially refused to repair it as it was no longer under warranty. When I told them I was going to the local media tv news to complain, they immediately agreed to pay for the part, but not the labor. …”
NHTSA complaint #10616147, filed 2014-07, 40,000 miles“My car is in beautiful condition except my dashboard is melting. It is sticky and cannot be touched, it has become worse in the last month and when I went to have the car serviced, the Toyota service said it needed to be replaced and the cost would be $500+. I have noted that several other owners have the same problem and Toyota mfg. Is getting away with a widespread defect that is costly to repair. Something has to be done to protect the consumer as this will have an effect on the trade value, personal sell value and also the electronics within the dashboard.”
NHTSA complaint #10630902, filed 2014-09, 26,533 miles“December 21, 2013. I was pulling into a parking place from a large parking lot, foot on the brake almost stopped; engine roared and I catapulted over the parking curb into and through some bushes and out the other side of the bushes angling right and into the street. I was able to bring the car to a stop and park at the curb approximately 20-30 feet down the street. No injury to myself or any other person. Over $5,000 damage to car exterior extensive scratches, back bumper came off; some undercarriage damage, details unknown to me. Still in body shop as of the afternoon of january 8, 2014.”
