“My 2006 Toyota Corolla has rust / corrosion in its aluminum rims . I have never known aluminum to rust. I have tried contacting Toyota and my local dealer and get no response or reason as to why this is happening.”

NHTSA complaint #10313805, filed 2010-02, 36,000 miles

“This happened on I-95 north in maryland between md-32 and md-175. At highway speed, the manual transmission of my 2006 Toyota Corolla came apart. The car immediately started making noise and began to shake. I lost control for a few seconds from the shaking and the feeling as if someone was pressing on the brake pedal. Once I gathered that something had failed (vs. A collision with a small object), I was able to supply extra gas and grip the wheel hard to prevent an accident. While making my way off the highway, the car squealed and grinded. …”

NHTSA complaint #10505246, filed 2013-04, 168,000 miles

“I backed my 2006 Toyota Corolla into a friend's driveway, and then put the car into drive to straighten it a bit. The car suddenly without warning shot across the street (perhaps at 45-50 MPH), went over a 6 high cement retaining curbing, and across a lawn into another driveway. All the while I had my foot firmly on the brake (not the gas pedal). I swerved the wheel to avoid hitting a telephone pole, and the house. I finally got the car into neutral, and at last the brakes engaged, and I was able to stop the car avoiding a pick-up truck in the driveway and a tree. …”

NHTSA complaint #10496026, filed 2013-02, 51,000 miles

“The wheels of my 2006 Toyota Corolla were rusting, while under warranty the dealer removed them and repainted them. Now they are rusting again with only 19,000 miles on the car.”

NHTSA complaint #10300011, filed 2010-01

“Steel wheels began rusting. After haggling, dealer removed wheels and tires and repainted the wheels and mounted the tires. This was in april 2009, mileage 17,500.”
