Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“I was driving on the freeway mesa,az at the rate of speed 72 MPH and the car just shut off, I put it in neutral and coasted through traffic, I was able to get it from the fast lane to shoulder, my heart was racing, I put the car in park try to start it didn't start for a few minutes, drove home few miles away. With no problems. Next morning wouldn't start. With 59,500 miles I was stocked. Had the codes read coils, spark plugs, so I changed them. Still didn't start. 3 day later, (she's garage kept) and started up. …”

NHTSA complaint #11329461, filed 2020-06, 59,500 miles

“We purchased and we were servicing our vw GTI 2010 at autobarn mt. Prospect/il. In the last 2 years we replaced all ignition coils at different time intervals and twice for cylinder #2. There are actually multiple issues here. First, this kind of problem can easily generate an accident, if one ignition coil fails at the wrong time and the wrong place (when passing or driving on a mountain road). Second, the ignition coils are poorly designed and they go bad way too fast making the car undriveable. Costly towing was required almost every time. …”

NHTSA complaint #10702691, filed 2015-03, 43,067 miles

“The car sputtered, shook, and made an awful sound similar to a ton of marbles in a drier machine. The timing chain went at roughly 82,000 miles. According to vw literature they stated that the reason they went back to a timing chain is that it is a lifetime, nonserviceable part. The timing chain going on an interference type engine destroyed my engine to the order of almost $4000. Vw did not want to assist with anything.”

NHTSA complaint #10733880, filed 2015-07, 81,979 miles

“The car stalled and lost power while driving. No power and no time to allow safely to move the car to the shoulder. Almost cause a rear end collision.”

NHTSA complaint #10598888, filed 2014-06, 80,000 miles
