Example complaints

One per model year, chosen for length and detail. Personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

2002: “2002 Volkswagen New Beetle 1.8 turbo had coilpack fail along with turbo blow off valve. This is a re-ocuring problem among these vehicles and it is inevitable that the other coilpacks will fail at some point. Vw would only replace the failed coilpack, I have to wait for the others to fail putting my life and the lives of my passengers in jeopardy”

NHTSA complaint #10003295, filed 2003-01, 18,900 miles

2000: “Car stalled out several times right after starting it. It would always start right back up normally, once the vehicle died on the interstate at approx. 70mph also came right back on. Took it to an independant repair shop (got no help from vw dealer at all) they told me it was an idle motor which is connected to the throttle body ($700 repair). We'll see if it works or not.”

NHTSA complaint #10088391, filed 2004-08, 24,000 miles

2001: “Brake lamps on 2001 New Beetle come on and stay on even though the vehicle is shut off and parked. This is similar to NHTSA campaign # 03v265000 (7-25-03). I checked vw and they told me the recall was VIN specific and my 2001 New Beetle was not included. It seems there may be more units affected than originally thought.”
