2003: “I own a 2003 Yamaha road star and the recall was done on trans. But 3 weeks a go it locked up while I was riding it. The shop tells me it was second gear that broke, he said that he didn't have any idea why. It only has 18000 miles and its in mint shape. Never been treated rough, don't think I could ever ride it again and feel safe.”
NHTSA complaint #10331100, filed 2010-05, 18,000 miles2002: “Lack of parts to repair motorcycle to repair recall defect . I have waited 2 1/2 months. To get repaired no parts .was told I couldn't ride because it may cause death or injury. This my only mode of transport. Have almost lost my job because of this . I talk to dealer and Yamaha cust. Support to no avail. Is it going to take legal action to get my motorcycle fixed. Or Yamaha should replace it with a new one. Please help me with this my transmission is locked up.”
NHTSA complaint #10062335, filed 2004-03, 6,500 miles2001: “I have a 2001 Yamaha road star midnight silverado that has an intermittent gas leak problem. It usually only happens when the engine is hot but not always. When trying to start the bike gas flows out of the carburetor down the engine and on to the ground. My friends 99 road star does the same and I have heard from several other owners that have this same problem. The bike will not start and acts like it is flooded as gas pours down the right side of the hot engine. The bike only starts after sitting for 10 to 20 minutes.”
