2007: “2007 Yamaha yzf r-1: a distinctive and dangerous throttle lag that occurs in 2nd gear at 5500 RPM that lasts for 3~5 seconds. I have had a close call under heavy traffic conditions. This is a serious issue that could lead to injury or deaths. Yamaha customer support was called and I was told that model does that and that they had no fix for it.”
NHTSA complaint #10188157, filed 2007-04, 30 miles2006: “I was in first gear riding through a neighborhood when my motorcycle started to jerk like it was starving for fuel. I was unable to hold the throttle at a certain level because of dangerously jerky motions. I pulled the clutch in to come to a stop and as the RPM's came down to normal idle speed it went past and killed the motor. I believe after having done research it is the throttle positioning sensor which would be an electrical issue.”
NHTSA complaint #10470065, filed 2012-08, 22,290 miles2004: “My 2004 r1 cuts out while driving and dies when you pull the clutch. I am a tech at a auto dealer and it feels like the throttle position loses signal. If the problems persists and the bike dies with the clutch out, the rear wheel will lock! The dealers will not warranty this part. This is not a wear and tear item and it is a safety concern.”
