2001: “I parked my car and found that the electrical system had almost caught fire, melting the carpet and plastic interior, glovebox and multiple electrical components and wiring harness. The airbags had deployed and there was black soot covering the interior. I found that there was water accumulated beneath the passenger footwell, where there is a major electrical fuse panel. The car is currently in front of my home and I've had to find a replacement vehicle due to the extensive damage to the wiring harness and modules. Also the smoke damage would prevent me from wanting to drive the car. …”
NHTSA complaint #10985482, filed 2017-05, 130,000 miles2003: “My 4 month old 2003 Bmw 530IA spontaneously caught on fire starting in the engine compartment while sitting out on my driveway next to my house. The car was totaled. The car was not running and had been off for 3.5 hours. Bmw 5 series cars had fires just like this one in 2001 models and Bmw issued a recall notice at that time because of a faulty auxiliary cooling fan switch. …”
NHTSA complaint #10014007, filed 2003-04, 4,800 miles2002: “On may 28th 2012 on the highway, the Bmw threw a service engine soon light. Using a scanner, a code p0741 was thrown. When I searched on google, I found it was very common for the e39 Bmw 530IA cars housing zf manufactured transmissions to have the torque converter turbine shaft seal deteriorated causing the fault. It is unreasonable to have Bmw to replace the transmission at a cost of over $4000 for a seal that is no more than $25.00. Therefore it should be a goodwill replacement due to the manufacture of a faulty transmission with a known part failure in the first place.”
