Example complaints

One per model year, chosen for length and detail. Personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

2018: “When braking to come to a stop at a light, the engine revved up to over 5000 RPM. I had to shut off the car to get it to stop. When I turned the car back on, it immediately revved up to over 7000, while I stood on the brake to prevent it from moving. Shut it off again, put flashers on and waited a minute. Restarted and it performed normally.”

NHTSA complaint #11383989, filed 2020-12, 32,000 miles

2001: “M62 v-8 engines used in the e-39 540 and e-38 740 are notorious for faulty timing chain guides. At around 125,000 the plastic can disintegrate causing the chain to skip a tooth. Once a tooth is skipped the valves are crushed and the engine is destroyed. The cost to replace the guides is extremely expensive. I was lucky in that I replaced mine at 140,000 miles”

NHTSA complaint #11299247, filed 2020-01, 145,000 miles

2019: “My check engine light came on for chassis stabilization and drivetrain malfunction. I took it to the dealership and they told me they repair would not be covered under warranty. Dealership alleges a rodent gnawed on a engine wiring harness. From what I gather from the dealership this occurs frequently. The manufacturer is aware of this problem but has failed to make necessary design changes to make these wiring harnesses inaccessible to rodents. …”
