Example complaints

One per model year, chosen for length and detail. Personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

2006: “Yesterday (01/06/17) - while driving in motion, 2 side airbags spontaneously exploded, throwing loose plastic material into the cabin and into my face. Cabin filled with smoke and burning smell. I pulled the car to the side of the road and turned off engine for smoke to disappear. I am going to take my car to Bmw dealer tomorrow morning for evaluation”

NHTSA complaint #11060996, filed 2018-01, 131,000 miles

2011: “I was driving casually when the motor suddenly shut off. No noise indicating engine failure ever happened. I coasted off the road and tried to restart. Nothing but a click. Eventually tried replacing starter motor but that didn't work. No engine lights or codes ever popped up. Turns out engine seized due to failed rod bearings.”

NHTSA complaint #11269732, filed 2019-10, 107,000 miles

2009: “Takata recall driving my car for about 30 minutes on the local street and stopped at a red light, light turns green, I try to accelerate and engine felt sluggish and shuts off. Towed the car to mrf engineering and car needed an engine replacement as my rod bearings caused the engine to fail. Costed roughly around $19,000 in parts and labor.”

NHTSA complaint #11002983, filed 2017-07, 67,000 miles
