“I entered a parking lot at 10 MPH and slowed to 5 MPH and turned left into a parking space and tried to stop. The brakes did not work and I crashed into the vehicle next to me. I immediately checked the brake fluid level and it was full. No ABS light has ever been on, and I just recently passed my vehicle safety check with no codes on the system.”

NHTSA complaint #10626165, filed 2014-08, 240,840 miles

“2000 chevy Astro van ABS problem. While traveling at low speed cities, parking lots etc... When attempting to stop the ABS appears to kick on causing failure to stop. I have had several near accidents with my children in the van recently. Mechanics say maybe master cylinder, maybe belts, maybe???? Can anyone say recall???”

NHTSA complaint #10361769, filed 2010-10, 134,000 miles

“Hi, I was driving this van when all of a sudden it stops. I had a very hard problem of trying to get off the road with no brakes or steering. I had it towed into service. They replaced everything fuel pump, sending unit, fuel filter, plugs, plug wires, distributor and reset the timing. It never did show up a check engine light or showed a code that something was wrong. I drove it two days later and it did the same thing. They checked it out and drove it again for a week and it happen again. I spent $1200 trying to get this safe to drive. It is as if the key was shut off. …”

NHTSA complaint #10593059, filed 2014-05, 155,000 miles

“1) several times (~10) in the past few weeks when we're almost to a stop (~ 5mph) the ABS kicks in and it feels like we're losing braking power 2) we have been able to stop, but it feels like a crash is bound to happen 3) independent mechanic indicates computer code telling loss of wheel speed GM has a recall of the front wheel hub/bearing assembly for exactly this reason - but it doesn't include the Astro - only trucks - why not the Astro??? It's basically the same vehicle.”

NHTSA complaint #10143451, filed 2005-11, 55,500 miles

“I have a 2000 Chevrolet Astro mini van. At approximately 65000 miles, just after the warranty expired I started having two lights illuminate on instrument cluster. One is a red brake light , and the other is an amber ABS light. I took vehicle to the Chevrolet dealer. They told me it was the brake control module which needed to be replaced at a cost of $1000.00. Once the unit heats up and the lights come on the ABS no longer works, and the brakes become jerky. Also the two lights blind you at night when you drive. …”
