“01 Impala 3.8. I went to start the car. There was an explosion and the engine caught fire. The intake plenum exploded when I attempted to start the car. The car was not repairable. The potential for injury is great if someone is standing near the open engine bay. The car was well maintained and in excellent condition despite the high miles.”

NHTSA complaint #10107585, filed 2005-01, 113,815 miles

“On 6/29/05 I was driving down the road and loss power. The car would only go a few miles per hour. It was hesitating upon take off. I drove it home and called a tow truck. It was picked up and taken to a repair shop. I was told that I needed a catalytic converter. I paid to have a catalytic converter and all parts replaced.”

NHTSA complaint #10139575, filed 2005-10, 122,000 miles

“On 4/09/12 at approximately 18:20 I got in the car that had been sitting all day in the driveway of my home and when I attempted to start it there was a loud explosion and smoke started coming out from under the hood. After feeling the hood I opened it and discovered a fire on the top of the engine and along the back side of the engine closest to the firewall. Fortunately since I was home I had quick access to an abc fire extinguisher and I ran into the garage and grabbed it and put out the fire. …”

NHTSA complaint #10456077, filed 2012-04, 169,878 miles

“The plenum on the intake manifold was warped due to a bad intake manifold and now antifreeze and oil are being released and are caking on my max airflow sensor and map sensor. I have done research and this seems to be a common problem. I think it's about time that GM made a recall on it because it is not an easy or, for the people who don't know a bumper from a fender, it is a very expensive fix. Especially when you bring it to a mechanic and they keep charging you $300 to change your max air flow sensor and you don't know any better.”
