Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“Power steering assist fails at slow speeds making parking difficult and turning the wheel while stopped difficult. Steering wheel binds and is resistant when this happens, and is most notable after vehicle is hot and has reached temperature. Some clatter noise occurs when this happens. I did complain to the dealer in detail while under warranty, but was told that nothing was found. Warranty has since expired , and I suspect that this problem either has no solution or would not be handled with a satisfactory outcome. …”

“I have learned that when my defrost is on and I hit a water puddle my power steering goes out for about 30 seconds at a time. I use the defrost to keep my windows from fogging up in the rain. Took me a while to figure out if I turn off the defrost it wouldn't happen. But then my windows fog up! Took it to my chevy dealership and they told me that was normal! I work on cars for a living. That is dangerous! I'm sure GM knows about this and maybe even some pal have died from this happening? Giving what is going on now with GM can you please make them fix this now please?”

NHTSA complaint #10577007, filed 2014-04, 8,000 miles

“When exiting the expressway and turning left on to new road the power steering lost assist, almost hit wall on overpass, then lost assist 2 more times on low spees turns, bad steering rack at 49000 miles.”

NHTSA complaint #10486676, filed 2012-12, 49,850 miles

“There have been several issues with the intermediate steering shaft and don't know how much of a safety concern it is but I feel with the amount of people who have had problems with it that it is something that needs to be checked into possible recall. I have had to have mine replaced at only 26,000 miles because from my understanding it is due to a poor design.”

NHTSA complaint #10607996, filed 2014-07

“The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds and attempting to make a left turn, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. In addition, the contact stated that the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle spun out of control. As a result, the contact crashed into a tree on the front driver side. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. The contact sustained head and back injuries that required medical attention. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. …”
