“My daughter was letting my tailgate down on my 2000 chevy s-10 pickup when both support cables snapped. The tailgate pinched her fingers between the tailgate and the bumper, it could have been much worse. She bruised her fingers, no permanent injury. I have yet to replace the support cables, we lower the tailgate carefully.”
NHTSA complaint #10114211, filed 2005-03, 69,000 miles“While unloading pieces of a cast iron tub, as I slid the tub onto the tail gate of my 2000 S10, one of the tail gate cables failed. The tail gate moved slightly but the other cable was able to take up the rest of the weight. The cable appeared to be very rusty inside. This appears to be similar to an issue remedied on the larger trucks but not dealt with on the smaller size trucks. (the day listed below is an estimate.)”
NHTSA complaint #10155703, filed 2006-04, 54,000 miles“Tailgate cable broke on r/s and cable is ready to break on the l/s. I just purchased new ones after I was told by a parts man at faulkner Chevrolet bethlehem pa that the s-10's are not on a recall to have these cables/latches replaced. My cost for the parts was $98.83.”
NHTSA complaint #10164016, filed 2006-07, 60,000 miles“While deer hunting in maine in nov 06 I was taking the deer off the roof of my cap when the cables both broke and sent me flying to the ground. I was very lucky and only twisted my back a little but it hurt. When I looked at the cables they were both rusted completely. I have owned 3 blazers and their system for the tailgate was great. Never a problem. General motors should repair this for all of us S10 drivers. Right now I have parachute cord holding up my tailgate.”
NHTSA complaint #10182024, filed 2007-02, 96,500 miles“Both tailgate cables snapped in half when I sat on the tailgate of my 2000 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck. The multi stranded cables had rusted in two. There was evidence that most of the strands in the cable had previously rusted in two prior to the total failure.”
