Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“The brake pedal went to the floor, due to a hole in the brake line caused by external corrosion. Luckily it was not at a stop street, or there would have been an accident. It occurred on the highway, so my wife was able to slowly drive home. I had to have all of the steel lines replaced for the vehicle to be safely driven again.”

NHTSA complaint #10566311, filed 2014-02, 69,000 miles

“My oldest son was driving my 2000 chevy 2500 pickup truck when the brake pedal almost went all the way to the floor of the truck. He narrowly missed rear ending the car in front of him. He was able to drive very slowly home with a very mushy feeling brake pedal. When I inspected the truck I found that the brake lines had rusted so bad the brake line had ruptured and was leaking fluid under the drivers side door.”

NHTSA complaint #10609072, filed 2014-07, 38,632 miles

“When coming to a stop sign I applied the brakes and the pedal went to the floor. I was able to steer into a parking lot and coasted to a stop. I had no brakes front or rear. When I stopped at the previous stop sign the brakes worked as usual. After having the pickup towed to a repair shop I was told and shown that the brake lines at the frame behind the left tire had rusted through. This failure came with no warning and at no time did the dash brake light come on.”

NHTSA complaint #10924450, filed 2016-11, 73,000 miles

“I was parking my truck and lost my brakes. Found that the brake lines rusted out and I had to replace them. Also I noticed that the transmission and fuel lines are rusted badly. I repaired the fuel line 6 months ago because it rusted threw. There should be a recall to replace all lines do to poor quality lines were used.”

NHTSA complaint #10316634, filed 2010-03, 75,000 miles

“Driving at 65 MPH, needed slow down for sudden traffic jam. Applied brakes and pedal sunk to floor. After brake pedal hitting the floor, finally had some braking power but nearly piled into vehicles in front of me. Brake fluid running out of vehicle. Repair facility identified ABS brake line rusted through and had to be replaced, which I visually verified. At no time prior to, during or after the line failure, did I receive any ABS warning light that the ABS system had failed.”
