Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“We were driving straight at 70 MPH on I-35; all tires were properly inflated; there were no obstructions or debris in the roadway; without warning, the left rear tire came apart. The tread came off of the tire, wrapped around the axle while the wheel kept turning. From what I've read on your site, this appears to be exactly the same as the firestone/explorer problems.”

NHTSA complaint #763004, filed 2002-06

“When thumping occurred and vehicle was pulling to right we had tires balanced. This did not cure the problem so took it in to have tires checked more throughly. We were told the two front tires had tread separation and to get them off imediately. Thumping and pulling ceased after new tires were put on. (DOT number: tiresize: 245/75r16)”

NHTSA complaint #735327, filed 2000-10

“These tires did not last one year. Odometer reading 30249 when tires new. I changed the tires at odometer reading 59126 miles. The tires are rated for 50,ooo. I had the tires rotated before I took a trip to kansas city this past summer in may. I was told by the owner of the goodyear service center in beaumont texas that the reason for the tire failure was under inflation. The tire manufacturer recommends one inflation and the auto manufacturer recommends another. I asked the goodyear service manager if goodyear had this in writing he said no. I beleive I got ripped off! …”

NHTSA complaint #735233, filed 2000-10

“Pe 00 040/tread separation: left rear tire had a tread separation while traveling at 70 MPH with driver and three passengers, one adult in a 1998 Chevrolet, Suburban; original equipment, tire size lt245/75r16. Dot numbers v611b1a447 and v611b1a487 for the firestone steeltex r4s tires, front tires were kept at 70psi and rear tires 75psi.”

NHTSA complaint #890265, filed 2001-06

“Orginal equipment firestone, steeltex tires, size lt245/75 r16 DOT # v611b1a, at 25,000 miles had to be replaced because of tread separation on three of the four tires, dealer has been contacted.”
