“I came to a stop sign and made a stop. I went to accelerate and the car turned off. Had to stop the car completely in the middle of an intersection to turn it back on.”
NHTSA complaint #10552798, filed 2013-11, 31,000 miles“Upon starting to accelerate from a stoplight the car suddenly accelerated on its own & the brakes would not work. Their was a vehicle stopped at the next intersection (4 way stop). To avoid hitting them I went to the right of the stop sign. There was just enough room in between the stop sign & a telephone pole. I had shifted the car to neutral, & finally got it stopped in front of a house. I was very shaken up by this & called my husband. He said he would be there asap. A man came out of the house & asked me was I ok. I told him what happened & let him know my husband was on the way. …”

I arrived at intersection to make at turn onto a 45 MPH street and traveled about 1 mile to light stopped and made a right turn onto another 45 MPH street (4 lanes). As I increased speed to 45 limit I felt the gas pedal pull away from my foot and the car began to quickly speed up. I tapped the accelerator and then the brake thinking that the pedal was stuck due to cold weather 18 degrees. It just kept increasing in speed. …”

Before changing the battery there was no abnormal driving conditions or noticeable horsepower issues. The manual states to take these actions if the light comes on while the engine is running, safely bring the vehicle to a complete stop as soon as possible, place the shift lever in park, and cycle the ignition key. The light should turn off. If the light remains lit with the engine running, your vehicle will usually be drivable. However, see an authorized dealer for service as soon as possible. …”
