Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“My husband was driving the van on dirt roads and then he heard a clunk, after taking it to the garage it was found that the axle had cracked and broke. We had to have it replaced.”

NHTSA complaint #10681627, filed 2015-02, 120,112 miles

“While driving our 2009 Grand Caravan to work, there was a loud clunk in the rear of the vehicle and the vehicle swerved to the left across the center line and off the left side of the road. Thankfully there was nothing coming the other way. I parked the car in a lot and called my husband. When he arrived, it was discovered that the rear axle had broke in two pieces. This vehicle has always been well maintained and has less than 70,000 miles on it. We have not taken it in for repairs yet but im sure that this safety item will be on our dime and not Dodge.”

NHTSA complaint #10706011, filed 2015-04, 69,476 miles

“On one occasion, my vehicle swerved without warning into the oncoming traffic lane, like being blown by a strong gust of wind. On another occasion, the vehicle spontaneously started pulling and my wife had to fight it to get it to pull safely to the shoulder. When I arrived I tried it and experienced the same problem. The dealer diagnosed it as a faulty clockspring & steering wheel position sensor. The electronic stability program had improperly sensed the steering wheel position and had been trying to compensate. …”

NHTSA complaint #10308200, filed 2010-02, 17,835 miles

“This is the 2nd of our 2009 grand caravans with the same failure in the exact same location. Pass side strut spring broke off at the upper end about 2-3 inches off the tip. Very hard to spot so look closely. 1st one was caught on a state inspection and this one was caught during routine pm. Is this a common problem?”

NHTSA complaint #11064389, filed 2018-01, 74,500 miles

“Front right strut spring breaking at the upper tip 2-3 inches. This is the 3rd of our grand caravans that this break has happened to in the exact same spot. It's hard to see so you have to look closely at the very tip or it won't be noticed.”
