Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“I have cracked dashboard in my 2000 Dodge 1500 ram pickup. This could damage the wiring in the vehicle and cause more unnecessary repairs had this not happen. The quality of the plastic is bad. It does not last more than 2 or three years before it starts cracking.”

NHTSA complaint #10210086, filed 2007-11, 75,000 miles

“Hole in AC system. Paid $130 to find out that I had a leak in my evaporator of my AC unit. Very difficult to find. Even more difficult to replace. Truck is only 5 years old.”

NHTSA complaint #10128313, filed 2005-07, 101,500 miles

“Dodge RAM 1500 pickups have two expensive/serious problems. (1) the air-conditioner evaporators under the dash fail and (2) the dash itself cracks in several places, so when the AC repairs (involving dash removal) take place, the mechanic tells you he/she has to also replace the dash...which is true. Many many complaints of dash cover failures in Dodge RAM 1500 and other similar vehicles. Repairs run $1200 or more. Dash should be a recall item.”

NHTSA complaint #10235842, filed 2008-07, 50,000 miles

“Air conditioner evaporator is leaking freon , and the fumes are coming into the vehicle through the air vents. The part is on a nation wide back order.”

NHTSA complaint #10032087, filed 2003-08, 80,000 miles

“My dashboard started cracking shortly after I purchased this truck. Now the dash is cracked in a way that if I touch it or if any weight is up on it, it will collapse on itself. The dealer told me that I would have to file a complaint regarding it or pay them a significant amount to remove and replace the dash with a similar dashboard, which may crack and break apart in the future as well. After speaking to the dealer I went to touch the dash, it buckled and pinched my hand from one of the cracks. Pulling my hand up the dash then layered itself.”
