“My last oil change I was inform the front subframe is badly rusted, to the point the mechanic could push a screw driver through it in spots. He informed me that driving it was a major safety risk, as the frame could fail, causing an accident. He said Ford has not issued a recall. They must be waiting for a higher body count when the front end of the car fails while going down the interstate.”
NHTSA complaint #10458073, filed 2012-05, 122,000 miles“While I find rust recalls for 2001 Focus fusions and windstars Ford claims there is no recall for frame collaps from excessive rust problems. We pulled out of our drive headed up a blind hill and the front end totally collapsed leaving us as an easy target. Several good folks jumped into action to help us get the mess safely off of the state highway by blocking traffic and helping us drag it back into our driveway. We are in our 70's and only drive the car 7-8 thousand miles a year. It has been babied and maintained by the book it entire lifetime . …”
NHTSA complaint #11338120, filed 2020-07, 158,000 miles“2001 Focus 112k mi. Bought from local Ford dealer, 1 yr old w, 21k on it. A recent inspection by my own mechanic tells me that the rear sub frame is rotted and it is dangerous to drive it. Especially at highway speeds. The local dealer laughed when I inquired about a nine year old car w/ rusted frame.”
NHTSA complaint #10330577, filed 2010-05, 112,000 miles“Coil springs. Left front coil spring broke with out reason. Thankfully the spring did not blow off of retaining area. If it had while I ws driving this could have potentially caused my steering to lock up blow a tire or who else know what. And the outcome from any of these could have been life threatening.”
NHTSA complaint #10221907, filed 2008-03, 73,000 miles“The front right coil spring snapped without any warning or previous issue indicating a problem. The failure resulted in the breakage of the right front strut leading to replacement of both front coil springs and struts on the vehicle. I had the exact same part break on my Ford windstar van but Ford declines responsibility.”
