What owners report

Owners of this model year report mostly electrical troubles, and by far the largest theme is the ignition switch and its wiring: complaints describe smoke, melted connectors, stalling and, in several cases, fires starting in the steering column or dash. A separate lighting complaint appears regularly too, where headlights or all lights cut out, often when the fog lights are on. Most of these reports are old and carry no mileage figure, though the ones that do range from roughly 17,000 to 98,000 miles.

  1. Electrical system

Ignition switch overheating, smoking or burning

    • 41 complaints (38%)
    • median 98,000 mi at 18.9 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • 25 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 1996–2010

Complaints describe smoke from the steering column or dash, a burning wire smell, and melted connectors at the ignition switch; some owners say the engine stalled or would not shut off with the key removed. Several reports involve vehicles that had already had recall 96V071000 performed and then showed the same melting or separation again. In a few accounts the fire spread and consumed the vehicle, usually while parked, and owners describe difficulty getting parts or getting the campaign completed. Most reports carry no mileage and span the mid-to-late 1990s, with the occasional case after a long interval since the recall work.

    Recall 96V071000

What to check: Ask whether recall 96V071000 was completed and keep the paperwork; inspect the ignition switch connector and nearby wiring for discoloration, melted plastic or a burnt smell.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I was driving to a funeral home to pick up ashes 40 miles from home with two chow dogs when the steering column started smoking and was burning. The vehicle stalled out and I pulled to the side of the road. I contacted aaa to have the car towed to a reliable repair shop. I had a used one installed as the Ford dealer said the computer does not go back to that year for parts. I did not know about the recall at that time. However I found out how to find out due to a good morning america show. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10325609, filed 2010-04

“Ignition switch failure ignition switch was recalled and replaced during NHTSA campaign 96v071000. Ford part #f29a-11572-da. Wiring harness end was also repaired due to melting during overheating of terminals. The switch that was replaced did not melt or fail internally, but became separated. The original switch as well as the replacement switch is made of plastic and a light duty white metal that are crimped on the ends to close the switch. I found that the old switch as well as the new faulty switch, became separated. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10166609, filed 2006-08, 98,000 miles
  2. Exterior lighting

Headlights or all lights cut out while driving

    • 15 complaints (14%)
    • median 17,000 mi at 18.3 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • filed 1995–2008

Owners report the headlights, and sometimes every light on the car, going dark for seconds to minutes and then returning, often when the fog lights are switched on. Some describe the dash above the headlight switch getting hot, and one report notes a service bulletin covering undersized factory wiring for the fog lights. A related account says turn signals and the horn stopped working, which prevented the car from passing inspection. Reported across a wide mileage range, from about 17,000 miles upward, with no clear pattern by age.

What to check: Test the headlights and fog lights together and watch for flickering or a hot dash; ask whether the fog light wiring has been inspected or upgraded.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“After 5 to 15 minutes after the fog lights are turned on, all the lights went out. The lights did not come back on for about 5 to 10 seconds. Luckily I was able to come to a stop without hitting anything. I have spoken with many people who own late model mustangs, 1986 to 1997, and most of them report this same problem. As secretary and newsletter editor for the first pennsylvania Mustang club, I come in contact with many 'Mustang' enthusiasts. …”

    NHTSA complaint #714447, filed 1999-11

“Since car new had problem when using fog lights, all lights would go out for 5 minutes or more whilst driving. Dealer at that time said there was no problem with lights. I did not realize at that time that the problem was related to the fog lights. I had used fogs frequently on long distance driving and had initally gone off road on fla turnpike. After warranty over, spoke to other gt owners who informed me of the same problem. Stopped using fogs after realizing wiring harness at switch was overheating. (glowing red).”

    NHTSA complaint #738639, filed 2001-01
  3. Electrical system

Stalling and no-restart with a hot engine

    • 8 complaints (7%)
    • median 47,000 mi at 20.6 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 1996–2008

Complaints describe the engine quitting while driving, sometimes repeatedly, with the car often restarting after a wait; one owner says it happened mostly once the car was fully warmed up. A mechanic in one report traced a stall to a failed ignition module. Owners describe these episodes as sudden and hard to reproduce for a shop. Mileage in the reports that state it ranges from about 47,000 to 98,000 miles; several complaints link the stalling to hot conditions.

    Recall 96V071000

What to check: Ask whether the ignition module or switch has been replaced, and take a longer test drive that gets the engine fully warm, including a shutdown and restart.

An excerpt from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“The contact owns a 1988 Ford Mustang. While driving 60 MPH, the vehicle began riding roughly and the engine failed. The contact pulled out of traffic, waited twenty minutes, and then restarted the vehicle. He drove a block and the vehicle stopped again. The vehicle had to be towed to a mechanic. The diagnosis was that the ignition module failed. The current mileage was 47,000.”

    NHTSA complaint #10241065, filed 2008-09, 47,000 miles
  4. Electrical system

Fog light and headlight wiring heat damage

    • 12 complaints (11%)
    • median 98,000 mi at 18.9 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 1996–2006

Complaints describe the fog light switch or the wiring harness at the switch overheating, in one case glowing red, and the headlight switch burning out repeatedly on the highway. One owner stopped using the fog lights after noticing the harness heat. Others note that the lights cut out for several seconds at a time while driving at speed. Reports do not include mileage; they cluster in the late 1990s on cars already out of warranty.

What to check: Turn the fog lights on for several minutes and feel the switch and dash area for heat, and ask whether the fog light harness has been replaced.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“When driving and put fog light on, the headlights/tail light go off, consumer received service bulletins . Service bulletin 89-17-11 states that wiring is too small from the factory, causing fog light problems and possible fire.”

    NHTSA complaint #986724, filed 1996-07

“Headlights shut off after about (20) of driving then come on after a minute. The dash above headlight switch gets very hot and dash has started to melt. *akthis happens until driving lights are turned off.”

    NHTSA complaint #986259, filed 1996-06

Buying note. Electrical work is the main thing to look at on this model year: confirm the ignition switch recall was done and that the switch connector and fog light wiring show no heat damage, and budget for an older car with limited parts availability. A warm-up test drive that includes headlights and fog lights will surface most of what owners describe.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 46 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong?
