What owners report

Owners of the 2021 GMC Acadia most often describe two kinds of trouble: the vehicle losing power or refusing to restart, and electrical/driver-information failures such as blank instrument clusters, dead cameras and key-fob or door-lock problems. Fuel pump control module failures are the single most repeated theme, appearing in complaints from the first few thousand miles to past 100,000 miles, with dealers often citing back-ordered parts. Several owners also report a steering-assist warning and cooling-fan running after shutdown, and a persistent exhaust rattle.

  1. Fuel system

Fuel pump control module failure and stalling

    • 37 complaints (24%)
    • median 36,970 mi at 5.1 yrs old (5 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2021–2026

Owners describe the engine shutting off or losing power with no warning, sometimes at highway speed or while crossing traffic, and often the vehicle then will not restart. Complaints say dealers diagnosed a failed fuel pump control module or fuel pump driver, and several note the part was on backorder with no repair date given. A few owners report repeat replacements of the same module. Reports in the sample range from roughly 24,000 to 78,000 miles, with several cases under 40,000 miles and one at about 41,000.

    Recall 21V4220005 related service bulletins

What to check: Ask the seller whether the fuel pump power control module or fuel pump driver has ever been replaced, and whether any open emissions recall or campaign applies to the VIN. Watch for any hesitation or long-crank starting during a test drive.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Car was parked overnight in my garage and in the morning it would turn over, but not start. Had to have it towed to my GMC dealer, but had great difficulty moving the car out of the garage because the transmission remains in PARK if the engine is not running. Had this happened on a highway while driving and without a place to safely get off the road ( which HAS happened to others who have made this same complaint to NHTSA), this could have been an extremely hazardous situation for the occupants of the vehicle. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11679168, filed 2025-08

“The car stopped working all of a sudden, I was driving the car with no issues that morning and parked & shut off car to go to my appt. I turned the car back on and worked fine as I was putting in my address on the GPS my car just stopped and shut off by itself. I pushed the start button and it sounded like it wanted to start but it wouldn't and the whole engine shooked. Called GM and car still under warranty had it towed to the nearest GM. They diagnosed it and said it was the fuel injector module that went bad. It's 2021 with only 23800 miles. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11550751, filed 2023-10
  2. Steering

Steering assist reduced warning with cooling fan staying on

    • 26 complaints (17%)
    • median 27,792 mi at 3.8 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2021–2026

Complaints describe a message that steering assist is reduced and to drive with caution, sometimes with the wheel becoming hard to turn at low speed or on the highway. Owners frequently mention the engine cooling fan continuing to run loudly after the vehicle is shut off, and in some cases a cold temperature reading or lack of heat. Dealers are reported to have traced the pattern to a coolant thermostat or coolant control valve, and in one case to a steering gear sensor. Mostly reported between about 27,000 and 37,000 miles in the sample, though some complaints give no mileage.

    2 related service bulletins

What to check: After a test drive, switch the engine off and listen for the cooling fan running on for several minutes, and check that the temperature gauge reads normally. Ask whether a thermostat, coolant control valve or steering gear sensor has been replaced.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“My 2021 GMC Acadia steering wheel dangerously stiffened while I was turning off the road into a busy shopping parking lot making it difficult to continue my turn. Having to put on my brakes sharply as to not collide with the out going traffic. There was no warning prior to the incident and had to make a quick safety judgement call and hoped the steering wheel would turn. Only after does the warning come on saying there is an issue with the steering assist and to drive carefully! The following morning I took it to Eagle Buick/GMC. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11770938, filed 2026-10

“My thermostat failed in my car, my temp goes out and reads at 0° then my steering assist says it’s reduced. There are many forums online regarding this issue.”

    NHTSA complaint #11740094, filed 2026-05
  3. Electrical system

Instrument cluster and radio screen failures

    • 12 complaints (8%)
    • median 85,500 mi at 5.4 yrs old (2 state mileage, few)
    • 3 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2024–2026

Owners report the instrument panel going dark or rebooting repeatedly while driving, leaving no speedometer or gauges, with the system sometimes coming back on its own. Others describe the radio or infotainment unit failing after a software update, taking hands-free calling, navigation and the backup camera with it. Complaints say dealers replaced the cluster or radio, and some owners note a service bulletin covering a software update for the cluster symptom. Reported across a wide mileage range in the sample, from a few thousand miles to over 100,000, and described as recurring over months or years.

    3 related service bulletins

What to check: Start the vehicle and watch the cluster and center screen through a full boot, and ask whether any software updates or cluster/radio replacements have been done. Note whether service records show repeated infotainment or instrument-panel visits.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“The Radio in my 2021 GMC Acadia had to be replaced due to an UPDATE Failure. I had to pay $221.32 for diagnostic and $1,580.18 for a new Radio. My Husband and I are the original owners of the 2021 GMC Acadia. My Dissatisfaction is why are some GMC products under recall for this issue but my 2021 GMC Acadia not part of the recall. The Hands free calling was not working, the GPS and also affected the back up Camera. all of these . a response is requested”

    NHTSA complaint #11663955, filed 2025-05

“While driving all displays, gauges, screens shut off. Unable to determine speed or anything. Car still drives but there is zero driver feedback. System will come back on and the it will happen again. Has been going on for 2 years. Dealer unable to determine the issue.”

    NHTSA complaint #11650979, filed 2025-03
  4. Engine

Exhaust resonator rattle and loud muffler noise

    • 8 complaints (5%)
    • median 28,000 mi at 1.5 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • filed 2022–2026

Owners describe a loud rattling or droning from under the front passenger area, likened to a leaf blower, that gets worse under acceleration and over time. Complaints say dealers identified a failed exhaust resonator or a broken internal baffle, and in some cases the catalytic converter or whole exhaust assembly was replaced. Several owners mention a service bulletin for the noise and say the repair was quoted at significant cost once warranty expired. Reported from about 28,000 miles upward, including cases just past the warranty period around 60,000 miles.

What to check: Listen for a rattle or drone from under the front floor area during acceleration, both cold and warm. Ask whether the resonator or exhaust assembly has been replaced and whether any related bulletin repair was performed under warranty.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Recently took vehicle for alignment for a pull to the right. After 3 alignments at the dealership I was told the rack and pinion gear sensor shorted out causing the vehicle to pull to the right. Also the exhaust has a rattle in the resonator confirmed by 2 sources. I asked the dealer to fix years ago under bumper to bumper and tsb PIT5863. I was told not enough techs and not enough time so now the warranty is expired and the issue isn't fixed.”

    NHTSA complaint #11696423, filed 2025-10

“May 2023 we took the car to the GM dealership for a electronic recall. We reported a rattling noise at that point in time. Whatever repair was done that the car ran w/o any noise for nearly a year. April 2024 the catalytic converter failed at just 61K miles on this vehicle. The mechanic at the same dealership noted a broken mounting bracket and replaced the catalytic converter. October 24 2024 at 76K miles the car started making the same noise. …”

Buying note. A pre-purchase inspection that includes the fuel system, brakes and battery/electrical checks is worthwhile on this model year, and service records showing completed recalls and software updates are more useful than the mileage alone. Because several reports involve parts that were back-ordered, ask the seller how any prior repair was resolved and whether the work is documented.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? NHTSA recorded 155 consumer complaints for the 2021 GMC Acadia. 28 of the complaints include a mileage, and 82% of those were filed for vehicles with under 50,000 miles; the median is 27,896 miles. Of all complaints, 8 involved a crash, 4 an injury, according to the filers. NHTSA lists 2 recall campaigns and 847 technical service bulletins for this model year. Compared with the other 15 GMC Acadia model years that have at least 25 complaints and are old enough to compare, this one scores 47 out of 100, where 50 is a typical year for the model (typical for this model). The comparison allows for the era and for how long each year has had to collect complaints, but not for how many vehicles were sold.

Example complaints

Electrical system: “Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2021 GMC Acadia. The contact discovered a mileage discrepancy after the purchase. The vehicle was a dealer sale. At the time of purchase, the mileage was approximately 29,000. The contact attempted to trade in the vehicle, and the purchasing dealer checked the VIN and retrieved a Carfax Report. The Carfax Report indicated that the mileage on the Title on 11/04/2024 was 58,000; however, on 02/04/2025, the mileage was 28,000, and the vehicle had been in an accident in the past.”

NHTSA complaint #11715591, filed 2026-02, 58,000 miles

Engine: “I got into an accident because my back up crap camera did not warn me that a car had turned behind me. Also when and backing up and a car is coming it doesn’t indicate the car is coming until it’s behind me. I’ve taken it to the dealer and they say there’s nothing wrong with it. Also there is no break when you come too close to something in front of you.”

NHTSA complaint #11463901, filed 2022-05

Fuel system: “My 2021 GMC Acadia that has 63,768 miles on it was idling Wednesday 9/30 when it died and would not start back we had to have it towed to a shop to get it checked out and it was throwing the P023F code for the fuel pump control module that has a recall bulletin for the same thing make model problem and under their 80,000 miles but recall not on my vin number and GM is refusing to pay for it. It's going to cost me 937.27 to get it fixed.”

NHTSA complaint #11768954, filed 2026-10

Other or unknown: “On numerous occasions the key fob is not detected and locked out of vehicle. Key fob notice on panel saying it’s not detected while driving. Took it to Jim Causley GMC dealer several times and then they kept vehicle for a week unable to duplicate and sent me on my way. This is still happening with no help.”
