“There seems to be a wide spread issue with the foam on the interior of Ionic 5 tires, Michelin 235/55/R 19. The foam dislodges from the interior of the tire and causes severe vibrations when driving at over 60 mph. The issue causes the tires to be unbalanced and can cause damage to the car. Wondering why Michelin doesn't address this issue and issue a fix other than stripping the tires of foam. My Hyundai dealer told me this is an on going issue and they have received no guidance from Michelin or Hyundai.”
NHTSA complaint #11621316, filed 2024-10“My car has 16000 miles and originally came with this exact tire brand. Apparently, because I drive an electric vehicle the tires have sound dampening foam on the inside of them. They are supposed to break down slowly with time however the last four months I have had two incidents where the foam became unglued from the rest of the tire, balled up, and caused a huge amount of shake in the car as I drove at speed 60 mph or higher. It did not affect low speeds. This is a safety hazard. The first time it occurred, I considered an outlier and Michigan did replace the tire. …”
NHTSA complaint #11590263, filed 2024-05“Sound deadening foam inside the tire delaminates and causes SEVERE wheel imbalance. This is a widespread issue on all the Hyundai Ioniq 5 forums with this tire. Mine cost me $300 and countless hours to diagnose. IT also severely impacted the cars handling and prevented the car from driving over 46mph (in my case), which is extremely dangerous on interstates. My local tire shop balanced the tires with the maximum allowed amount of weights, but then the vibration was still there at 59mph. The Hyundai dealer then diagnosed it and they charged me $180 to do a dynamic balance. …”
NHTSA complaint #11581285, filed 2024-04“Car bounce if at 62 MPH had dealership check balance and rear two tires could not balance. Dealership de-rimmed tires and found the inner foam has fallen or detached from the inside of tire causing. Resulting in foam moving around inside tire throwing g off balance.”
NHTSA complaint #11582089, filed 2024-04“Michelin Primacy AS 235/55 R19 - OEM tires on Hyundai Ioniq5 acquired new in September 2023 - mileage at the time of incident 10,800 miles Front tire started went off balance causing steering wheel vibrations and shaking that increased with speed - car was not drivable above 55MPH due to excessive shaking and vibrations of steering wheel - this presents safety concern as it may lead to loss of control and excessive wear and tear on other suspension / wheel components. …”
