What owners report

Owners of this model year most often describe cracked steel wheels, engine stalling or sudden shutdown while driving, and repeated air bag warning-light problems. Many complaints involve low-mileage cars, and several describe cooling-fan or fuel-line faults that led to engine-compartment fires.

  1. Wheels

    Cracked steel wheels

    • 18 complaints (8%)
    • median 56,500 mi at 3.5 yrs old (14 state mileage)
    • filed 2002–2005

Owners describe a thumping, clanking or grinding noise from a wheel that turns out to be a crack running around the rim, sometimes close to breaking apart. Several report multiple cracked rims, including replacements, and dealers often declined coverage once the car was out of warranty or told owners the damage came from tire installation. Some owners note their vehicle identification was not included in the wheel recall campaign. Typically reported between roughly 30,000 and 70,000 miles, sometimes within the first few years of ownership.

    Recall 05V1590001 related service bulletin

What to check: Inspect all four rims closely for hairline cracks around the lug holes and rim edge, and ask whether the wheel recall was performed for this vehicle.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I have a third factory wheel on my car that has broke during normal driving. The wheel started making a sound like bearings going out on the rear drivers side. When I pulled into the drive way I heard the wheel brake. When I checked it, sure enough it broke through. I now have kept two out three wheels that have broke.”

    NHTSA complaint #10090438, filed 2004-09, 69,202 miles

“I have a 2001 Kia RIO, manual transmission. At 32000 miles the left front rim cracked, and was replaced under warranty. I had the right front crack at 62000 miles. Kia did not consider this a defect, so I had to purchase a new rim for 98.00, and have it mounted at additional cost. I spoke with the dealer, and Kia directly about this being a safety concern. Kia's response was since it was out of warranty, they would only cover manufacturing defects. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10016604, filed 2003-04, 62,000 miles
  2. Engine cooling

Engine stalling or shutting off while driving

    • 33 complaints (15%)
    • median 46,290 mi at 3.4 yrs old (13 state mileage)
    • 3 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2001–2007

Complaints describe the engine quitting at speed, at a stop sign or shortly after refueling, sometimes with loss of power steering and brakes, and occasionally restarting only after several attempts. Dealers reportedly replaced fuel pumps, the engine control unit, sensors and ignition parts, or said they could not reproduce the problem. A few owners describe engine seizure or a thrown internal part requiring engine replacement. Spread across the sample from a few thousand to over 70,000 miles, with many reports in the 30,000-60,000 mile range.

    1 related service bulletin

What to check: Ask for service records covering fuel pump, crank position sensor and engine control unit work, and take a test drive long enough to include a stop-and-restart cycle.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“(1) there were no events leading up to the engine failure (2) for no reason what so ever, the engine just seized while I was sitting at a stop sign. There was plenty of oil and water in the engine. All routine maintenance had been performed. I am now being told I will have to replace the entire engine. I am 14,000 miles over the 60,000 mile warranty. I haven't even owned this care an entire year.”

    NHTSA complaint #10146313, filed 2005-12, 74,445 miles

“Driving in traffic, made right turn into driveway at 30 MPH and the engine died, steering was now unassisted. I rolled the car into a parking spot. The car started upon my return to the car. This has happened at least 6 other times since I've owned the vehicle. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10182186, filed 2007-02, 52,595 miles
  3. Fuel system

    Engine-compartment fire after stalling

    • 20 complaints (9%)
    • median 42,500 mi at 3.3 yrs old (12 state mileage)
    • 15 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2001–2012

Several complaints describe smoke or flames from under the hood shortly after the engine ran rough, chugged or stalled, with one inspection attributing it to a fuel line or fuel connection at the firewall. Others describe a cooling fan shorting and smoking. Vehicles in some of these reports were totaled. Reported from very low mileage up to about 60,000 miles, including while parked with the engine running.

    Recall 04V179000Recall 03V352000

What to check: Ask whether the fuel distributor and fuel tube recall work was done, and have the fuel lines and cooling fan inspected for leaks, chafing or heat damage before driving.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I have had my Kia for 3 years now (bought on april 24,2001), after only having it one year(april 25, 2002) my two front tires were shredded all the way to the metal. The dealer said that my tires were only covered for a year so I had to replace them, come to find out it was caused by the alignment that showed no sign of being off. Right after that the cooling fan shorted causing the engine to smoke and the car to be in the shop for 2 weeks because Kia couldn't order the right part. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10078899, filed 2004-06, 9,000 miles

“I was driving home from work, and when I was approximately 1 minute from my home, my check engine light came on, and my car began chugging . I made it as far as 3 houses away from my driveway when my car just stalled out. Rather than re-starting, I decided to roll to my driveway. I didn't even make it as far as my driveway, and my car caught on fire. The black smoke was so thick, you couldn't even see through it. My whole engine went up in flames, and my car is now totaled. I have had absolutely no problems with this car until now.”

    NHTSA complaint #10005277, filed 2003-02, 34,000 miles
  4. Electrical system

Hesitation, rough running and check engine light

    • 33 complaints (15%)
    • median 51,000 mi at 4.3 yrs old (10 state mileage)
    • 5 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2000–2013

Owners describe the check engine light coming on along with bucking, hesitation or rough running, sometimes traced to sensors, spark plugs or wiring ignition components. Some report repeated dealer visits without a lasting fix, and others note dashboard or electrical faults such as blown fuses and dim instrument lighting. Generally reported between about 20,000 and 100,000 miles.

What to check: Scan for stored engine codes before purchase, ask what repairs were already attempted, and check that dash and warning lights behave normally.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Aside from the fact that we have never received one recall notice from Kia or the dealer, on september 12, 2007, my 2001 Kia RIO (which we bought new in 1/2001) engine light came on after the car engine had warmed up, and the car began to lurch and chug. It stalled at a light and restarted when I turned the key. I applied the accelerator and it revved to a higher gear and lunged forward then immediately tried to stall in the intersection. I nursed the vehicle back home. It was taken to a mechanic where the code claimed an o2 censor was bad. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10203567, filed 2007-09, 58,000 miles

“Since december '03, check engine light has come on at least a dozen times. On 2 occassions, car bucks while driving and stalls. Have had it in to the dealer 4 times since december. I am now scared to drive the car for fear it will break down again.”

    NHTSA complaint #10059064, filed 2004-02, 36,000 miles
  5. Air bags

Air bag warning light stays on

    • 33 complaints (15%)
    • median 24,500 mi at 2.8 yrs old (8 state mileage, few)
    • 14 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2000–2008

Owners report the air bag light illuminating and staying on for long periods, sometimes going off again, and returning after dealer repairs. In some cases the light was reportedly only visually checked rather than diagnosed, and one owner reported air bag deployment in a collision. Mostly reported under about 40,000 miles, including on relatively new vehicles.

What to check: Confirm the air bag light goes out after the bulb-check at startup and ask for any diagnostic or repair records for the air bag system.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“My car had a recall because of stalling issues before also again when I had this problem the fuel injector was unplugged now it stalls all the time engine check light comes on had a airflow sensor light changed and it is still stalling even more check engine light comes on but goes off before I can get it checked and so I am getting nowhere and I am scared too death off having a accident because of this issue I think this is a real safety issue it is a 2001 Kia RIO can you help me I have contacted Kia already.”

    NHTSA complaint #10196659, filed 2007-07, 60,000 miles

“Dt: the consumer stated that the 2001 Kia RIO had the air bag light on the dashboard. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, but it was not checked for the air bag light. The consumer said that the dealer did a visual check. The tires were prematurely worn out. The consumer specifically said it was because of the wheel recall 50v159000 that the tires were replaced. Front and rear brakes have had to be replaced also at 20,000 miles. Updaed”

    NHTSA complaint #10136440, filed 2005-09, 20,000 miles

Buying note. A pre-purchase inspection with a focus on the steel wheels, fuel lines and cooling fan is worthwhile on this model year, along with checking whether the wheel and fuel-system recall campaigns were completed. Service records for stalling-related repairs help show whether the car has a history of unresolved drivability problems.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? Another dealer said doing that ruined the integrity of the frame. Also, there was an exhaust leak into the vehicle. The transmission bracket was bent and it would not hold the transmission in place. When the dealer fixed it the bolts fell out. The caller had to take vehicle back to dealer. The check engine light was on constantly. Vehicle will not pass inspection with the light on. Dealer said it will pass inspection with the light on. …”

Air bags: “I was involved in a 45mph head on collision. The other car was a chevy cobalt. She had run a stop sign and hit us in the front. I was the passenger in the Kia both me and the driver of the Kia were forced into the windshield and he hit his off the steering wheel as well. Neither of the airbags in my car went off. But both the airbags in the cobalt did. My car was also called a total with damage done to the front bumper and framing. Two mechanics that looked at the car could not believe that the airbags did not deploy.”

Wheels: “I was on a major interstate doing the speed limit of 65 MPH when I heard a loud pop sound. The car started to shake and I thought I had a flat tire. I immediately put on my hazard lights and slowed down to reach the nearest exit ramp. I was alone in the car and thank god I had no children in the car and as soon as I reached the exit ramp I got off the exit and called aaa. They sent a tow truck but when the driver went to put the car up he noticed the right back wheel was extremely loose and then called for a flat bed. …”
