“We rented a 2008 Kia Sedona van with the 3.8l engine and it lost power in the middle of the highway at speeds of 65-70mph. The engine did not die, but the check engine and ESC warning lights came on and there was no power being transferred to the transaxle. On the first van the incident occurred after driving only 50 miles, the replacement van was driven 1,286 before it too did the same thing. We informed advantage car rental that it appears to be a systematic problem with that make and model.”

NHTSA complaint #10290742, filed 2009-11, 32,700 miles

“Traveling at 85 MPH, cruise control on, ESC off light and check engine light illuminated on the dashboard and the vehicle decelerated rapidly. Lost ability to accelerate past 20 MPH. Vehicle was stopped and restarted. Accelerator resumed working for however the check engine light illuminated and checked the code it was throttle position sensor. This morning the check engine light remained on and the vehicle.”

NHTSA complaint #10925768, filed 2016-11, 55,000 miles

“This van has the exact same issue with the brake switch that all the others had in recall. Shifter is stuck in park. Esc light is on and brake lights are not working. There are no open recalls for this issue on the VIN number. Further, the Kia dealership refuses to fix it free of charge.”

NHTSA complaint #10862997, filed 2016-05, 146,683 miles

“Going uphill toward traffic light, accelerating to maintain speed for crossing intersection, check engine light on, ESC light on, engine suddenly idling causing total loss of power near the intersection. Had enough momentum to pull on the grass shoulder. Diagnostic from garage: throttle sensor stuck. Extremely dangerous situation.”

NHTSA complaint #10396082, filed 2011-04, 34,400 miles

“Without warning goes into limp mode very little acceleration esp light on and check engine on. Will restart and drive normally until next episode! Car moving at highway speed when this happens or on city street but always moving.”

NHTSA complaint #11025248, filed 2017-09, 48,000 miles
