“When the car was parked in the garage overnight, I would come out to the strong smell of gas, when I took it to my mechanic, he told me the tank was coming apart at a seam at the top. After searching the internet for similar problems, I found many situation like mine. This is an extremely dangerous and expensive problem that one never expects.”

NHTSA complaint #10639228, filed 2014-09, 104,000 miles

“I've been smelling gas and I thought it might have been from other cars on the road until today when my car started making a loud noise sounding like it was coming from the passenger front side.it stalled out on me around a month ago for no reason and when I went to park it today I kept smelling gas and noticed it's my vehicle.”

NHTSA complaint #10554220, filed 2013-11, 131,632 miles

“My gas tank is leaking, ford has been contacted and are unable to come up with a new gas tank. I am being told the earliest possible date to receive a tank (new or used) will be november 7, 2014 and that is no guarantee. The girl I spoke with at ford client services mentioned that I should not be driving the car. I believe this problem is widespread due to the lack of availability of this part.”

NHTSA complaint #10644220, filed 2014-10, 79,000 miles

“I smelled the strong smell of gas while the vehicle was parked. Took it to a ford dealership and they found a leak in the fuel tank at the top of the tank. I was told the fuel tank would cost 1500.00 and then 500.00 for labor for a total of over 2000.00. I feel like this should not have happened to a vehicle 7 years old. I have had many vehicles over the years and have never had a fuel tank leak this bad before. This is a serious safety issue.”

NHTSA complaint #10637865, filed 2014-09, 112,000 miles

“After noticing same fuel leak under my car , I took them to ford dealership for inspection. Their technician found that fuel tank is heavily corroded around weld on the rear side of the fuel tank, and that fuel leaks at that place when the fuel tank is full. He told me that tank should be replaced. After that I talked with Lincoln representative and she told me that Lincoln doesn't cover fuel tank replacement after 5 year warranty or 50000 miles.”
