What owners report

Owners of this model year most often describe engine oil use between changes, with low-oil warnings often reported in the first several thousand miles. Unexpected automatic braking or steering from driver-assist features is the next most common theme, and some reports describe stalling, hesitation or sudden loss of power. Rear differential failures and airbag warnings also appear in the sample, but less often.

  1. Engine

Engine oil consumption and low oil warnings

    • 15 complaints (28%)
    • typically at 1.7 yrs old
    • filed 2022–2026

Owners describe the engine using oil between scheduled changes, with the low oil light or a low dipstick reading appearing well before the next service. Some say they top off the oil repeatedly, and a few mention a bulletin while describing topping off as the approach instead of a repair. Some complaints say the dealer found no leaks or did not acknowledge a problem, and others describe the pattern from early ownership. Many reports place the first low oil warning between about 2,000 and 9,000 miles, and some describe the warning recurring past 11,000 miles.

    1 related service bulletin

What to check: Ask the dealer whether the oil consumption warranty extension listed in the bulletin applies to this vehicle. Check the oil level between scheduled changes and keep a simple log so the rate of oil use is documented.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Experiencing a known excessive oil consumption issue. Low engine oil warning light came on and upon checking, oil was low. This occured at 4000 to 4200 miles. It occured again about 4000 miles later and again at a similar interval. I notified the dealer and scheduled a repair date but I am concerned of other possible damage that may have already occured due to this issue. An oxygen sensor needs to be replaced and is most likely due to the engine malfunction. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11515069, filed 2023-04

“My Mazda 3 2.5T has been burning oil in excess. The car has a total of 24,000 miles and has been serviced 3 times. I have had to add oil in between every service. The oil has been completely burned off by 4,000-5,000 miles. I have noticed that other people have been posting about the same issues online. When talking to the dealership they state that they have noticed this issue with the 2.5T’s but offer no fix and seem to overfill the engine oil to try and compensate.”

    NHTSA complaint #11472002, filed 2022-07
  2. Forward collision avoidance

    Unexpected automatic braking or steering

    • 20 complaints (37%)
    • typically at 2.6 yrs old
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2021–2026

Owners describe forward collision or emergency braking that engages when no hazard is present, including during turns, at a green light after the car ahead has moved away, and on open roads. Other complaints describe lane-keeping steering that turns the wheel on straight roads or where no curve exists, and some say it happened with lane-keep assist switched off. Some complaints say the dealer could not turn the feature off, and some describe a warning followed by hard braking. These complaints do not give a mileage, and those that describe conditions mention turns, traffic lights, or speeds around 40 mph or lower.

What to check: On a test drive, check how the forward collision and lane-keeping settings can be adjusted in the vehicle menu. Ask the dealer whether any software updates for these systems apply to this vehicle.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I had two incidents during a short 25 min drive. Incident 1: I was in right side of the road, there were 2 lanes on this side. I was in the far left lane driving at below 30 mph, there was no vehicle directly behind me, and no vehicle directly in front of me. There was no vehicle in the oncoming side of traffic. There was 1 vehicle in the right lane next to me, about 20 feet behind. This vehicle slowed down to turn right into a parking lot. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11446816, filed 2022-01

“When this feature is left on in my vehicle, it will detect curves, vehicles, and objects that are not there, and as a result, will attempt to turn my steering wheel (safety concern). I have had to keep this feature turned off to prevent it wrecking the car, because I could be on a straight road, and it will detect a curve that isn’t there and begin turning the wheel, which could result in a fatal accident if not corrected and disabled by the driver. It is available for inspection upon request. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11644042, filed 2025-02
  3. Engine

Stalling, hesitation or sudden loss of power

    • 5 complaints (9%)
    • typically at 2.9 yrs old
    • filed 2022–2026

Owners describe the engine shutting off completely while in traffic, and again after a restart. Others describe a shudder and shutdown when pulling away from a stop, and a sudden loss of power on the highway with the car limiting its speed, a check engine light and a misfire code. Some describe surging or a slowly dropping engine speed at steady speeds, and another owner mentions repeated dealer visits without a clear resolution. Mileage is given for a shutdown at about 3,500 miles, and other complaints describe conditions such as pulling away from a stop, merging, or steady highway speeds.

What to check: On a test drive, note any hesitation, surging or shaking when pulling away from a stop and at steady speed. Ask a dealer or independent shop to check for stored misfire or powertrain codes and to review service records for similar symptoms.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“My 2021 Mazda 3 was bought used in August 2023 and is about a year old in my possession. it has been at the Mazda dealership for repairs multiple times since August 2023. it dangerously stalls and hesitates when trying to accelerate from a stop position. When the brake pedal is released and I start to accelerate like merging onto highways, the car rumbles or shakes slightly and then shuts off. I Came across a review online that had the exact same problem and it stated a PCM update solved the issue. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11626518, filed 2024-11

“A have a new 2021 Mazda 3 Hatchback with 3,500 miles. As I was driving and approaching a traffic light to stop, my car shut down completely while in traffic. I turned on my hazard lights, put the car in the park position, and restarted the vehicle. As I proceed with driving, when I made a right turn onto the blvd, a minute after turning when I came to another stop, the vehicle shut down again. I called Romano Mazda in Syracuse, NY. They set me up with an appointment for the following week and gave me a rental. They kept my vehicle for 3 days. …”

Buying note. Anyone considering this model year may want to review oil-level and service history during an inspection, since oil use is the most common theme here. A test drive that includes stop-and-go traffic, highway merging and use of the driver-assist features can help check the concerns described above.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 47 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? Example complaints

Engine: “At around 3600 Miles my Mazda which I had for only a couple of months displayed a low engine oil light which required a visit to the dealership. This was under normal driving conditions.”

NHTSA complaint #11477241, filed 2022-08

Electrical system: “During the incident, the vehicle exhibited an uncontrollable malfunction—the steering wheel suddenly jerked sharply to the right while accelerating violently, leaving me unable to steer or brake effectively, the car was looking forward. The car ultimately came to a stop upon colliding with a truck parked diagonally in front of me. After impact, I observed that the front tires remained stuck in a turned-right position, with the steering wheel also locked in that position. This was not an isolated event. …”

NHTSA complaint #11645615, filed 2025-02

Forward collision avoidance: “At red light, close behind car in front of the mazda. After light turns green, start driving the mazda after car in front moves forward. Although the car in front is moving forward at a higher rate of speed, increasing the distance between it and the mazda, the automatic emergency brake kicks on and stops the vehicle abruptly. Luckily the cars behind the mazda reacted in time and did not rear end it.”

NHTSA complaint #11613907, filed 2024-09

Other or unknown: “For the past 7 months (since July 2023) the passenger rear tire keeps loosing air pressure about every two weeks requiring more air. It always drops to 10 points below the other tires. The tires have been rotated twice so it is not a problem with the tire. I believe there is a recall for the same or similar issue on Mazda 3s just not including my VIN#. I brought my car to good year a few times unable to stop this from happening.”
