What owners report

Owners of this 2011 Mazda3 most often write about the driver's seat coming loose or wobbling, a passenger airbag light that stays on, and loss of power steering assist, with smaller clusters of complaints about radio/amplifier noise and a sticky, separating dashboard. Many of these complaints come in well past 60,000 miles, though the seat and power steering reports also show up on low-mileage cars.

  1. Air bags

Passenger airbag light on / airbag sensor fault

    • 27 complaints (20%)
    • median 62,500 mi at 5.4 yrs old (18 state mileage)
    • 7 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2011–2026

Complaints describe the passenger airbag indicator staying illuminated or the airbag warning light blinking in a pattern with no one in the passenger seat, which owners understand to mean the passenger airbag is disabled. Several point to the seat track occupant sensor under the passenger seat; some had it replaced once and saw it fail again, and dealers in some cases told owners the behavior was normal or charged a diagnostic fee. Mostly reported between roughly 44,000 and 110,000 miles, on cars from a few years old to over a decade.

What to check: Turn the key on and watch the passenger airbag indicator with the seat empty and again with an adult seated; it should read correctly both ways. Ask whether the occupant sensor or its connector has been replaced.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Takata recall my airbag light is still on time by time for unknown reason . I bring this to attention on time in my bumper to bumper guarantee in my dealer on 2011, dealer said that is not a problem at that time. I received a letter by mail on oct 2017 that a possible settlement is related to air bag , I am worried that something is wrong in my airbag ,so I advised my dealer they refused to check by free and asking me to paid for a review because there is not recall register in my vehicle. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11047311, filed 2017-11, 12 miles

“My 2011 Mazda 3 driver seat has come off track while I was on the highway. I went to slide my seat back and the seat popped off the track, luckily I caught myself. Mazda dealership said they wouldnt cover it. Now, 3 weeks after my warranty ended, my passenger airbag sensor has lit up, on the dash and above the radio. Mazda said it was my sensor under my seat but still had to charge $105 dollar fee to find the problem??? The airbag sensor came on one morning on my way to work. Nobody was in the car except me.”

    NHTSA complaint #10837051, filed 2016-02, 52,000 miles
  2. Seats

Driver's seat loose, wobbling or off its track

    • 17 complaints (13%)
    • median 72,000 mi at 5.9 yrs old (10 state mileage)
    • 2 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2012–2026

Owners describe the driver's seat wobbling, shifting on its track, sinking at one corner, or in some cases coming off the track entirely, sometimes while driving or cornering. Several mention the manual seat lifter or the link that attaches the seat to the floor, and one says a dealer identified the seat lifter link as inoperable. Some say the vehicle was not covered by the seat recall campaign or that the part was unavailable, and others report no repair was made. Reported from very low mileage up to roughly 170,000 miles, with most sample reports between about 45,000 and 160,000 miles.

    Recall 17V082000

What to check: Sit in the driver's seat and rock side to side and fore-aft while sliding it, checking for play, popping or uneven tilt. Ask whether recall 17V082000 was completed on this VIN and get it done if not.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Sunday night while driving and making a left-hand turn my driverside seat completely detached from the seats harness thats bolted into the body of the vehicle. As research the problem and found that that exact safety issue had a recall. Ive made multiple unsuccessful attempts at scheduling my car to be serviced by Mazda. They keep telling me that they will call me back. This has yet to happen.”

    NHTSA complaint #11352597, filed 2020-09, 158,600 miles

“The drivers seat will sometimes come out of its track, and not lock in securely. When the seat is locked, it seems to be ok, but if I should move the seat forward to accommodate for a rear passenger its like the seat will not sit squarely in the track, and it will either sink, or elevate at one corner and slide forwards or backwards. Its dangerous if I were to hit my brakes, the seat would move forward inadvertently causing me to slam on my brakes. Also, there appears to be an air bag indicator light that will flash on my dashboard. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10825286, filed 2016-02, 70,000 miles
  3. Steering

    Power steering assist cuts out

    • 11 complaints (8%)
    • median 65,000 mi at 6.5 yrs old (9 state mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2011–2022

Owners report the steering suddenly becoming very heavy, sometimes with the power steering and stability control warning lights on, then returning to normal after the car is shut off and restarted. Dealers quoted a power steering pump replacement in some cases; one owner was first told a new battery was needed and the problem remained. Complaints describe the loss of assist at city and highway speeds and while parking. Appears from near-new mileage up to about 160,000 miles, often recurring intermittently across several drives.

What to check: During a test drive, check that steering effort is even at low speed and while parking, and watch for the power steering and stability control lights. Scan for stored steering codes.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“When driving the steering wheel locks up . Super hard to pull over. Very dangerous. Could have been killed. The power steering light and engine light come unill I turn vehicle off and on. I have read many post on line of this happening to this vehicle and I'm shocked this is not a active recall or haven't caused any deaths.”

    NHTSA complaint #11355694, filed 2020-09, 160,000 miles

“On september 3, 2011 I purchased a brand new 2011 Mazda 3 from Mazda of escondido. On tuesday september 13, 2011 I started my vehicle and turned on the headlights at which point the power steering light and also the traction control warning lights came on. As I was trying to park my vehicle I noticed difficulty with the power steering. Also, the dsc button would not turn on/off while the light was on. On monday september 19, 2011 the same two lights came on again. …”

Buying note. Check the driver's seat mounting and the passenger airbag indicator closely, and confirm whether recall 17V082000 was performed on the specific VIN. A test drive at parking-lot speeds will also show whether steering assist is steady.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong?
