What owners report
Owners of this model year most often describe a sticky, melting or cracked dashboard on the passenger side, especially in hot, sunny climates, along with front and rear subframe corrosion that shows up as steering and alignment problems. Airbag warning lights and door latch or alarm faults are also common, and many reports arrive well past 70,000 miles. Complaints range from gradual cosmetic deterioration to sudden steering symptoms once the subframe rusts through.
- Body and structure
Subframe rust and corrosion
Mentioned in 19 of 60 sampled complaints
Complaints describe front and rear subframe or crossmember metal rusting through, sometimes found during unrelated service or a state inspection. Owners report holes and separation in the structure, rear wheels visibly cambered out, and, in some cases, loss of steering control when mounting points give way. Several say the front subframe was replaced under a recall while the rear was not covered, and that parts were on back order. Mostly reported between about 60,000 and 165,000 miles, concentrated in vehicles driven in states with road salt.
What to check: Have the car put on a lift and inspect both subframes and crossmembers for flaking rust, holes or separation, and confirm whether the front subframe recall work was completed for this VIN.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“Hello, back a few years ago Mazda issued a recall for the front subframe of our Mazda 6 due to premature and extremely damaging rust that rendered the vehicle dangerous. We had this replaced and all was fine until not that long ago when we had to repair an exhaust leak and in the process realized how bad the rear subframe is rusted out as well... …”
NHTSA complaint #11375138, filed 2020-11, 145,000 miles“The vehicle was purchased by me and given to my son to drive a year ago. The vehicle has about 120,000 miles and run perfectly except it won't pass a state inspection because the inspector says the subframe under the engine is so badly rusted, the engine could easily drop out from under the car while in operation. This is a safety hazard and were told Mazda is ignoring the issue.”

Melting, sticky or cracked dashboard
- 71 complaints (18%)
- median 60,000 mi at 5.9 yrs old (45 state mileage)
- 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
- filed 2014–2023
Owners describe the top of the dashboard, usually on the passenger side near the windshield, becoming shiny, sticky and gooey, and later cracking. They report glare reflected onto the windshield that interferes with forward vision and an oily film building up on the inside of the glass. According to complaints, dealers and Mazda customer support generally said nothing could be done beyond replacing the whole dashboard, or that any related program had closed. Often reported from roughly 20,000 to 100,000 miles, typically in hot, sunny southern climates and after several summers outdoors.
What to check: Inspect the passenger-side dash top in bright light for shine, tackiness or cracks, and ask whether the dashboard has ever been replaced. Check the inside of the windshield for an oily film.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“The dashboard of my Mazda is melting. The dashboard is shiny and sticky with a terrible glare. It looks like it is wet, but it is really gooey. I am worried the airbags may deploy prematurely or not at all. The damage to the dashboard is getting worse. I feel this is inferior workmanship and or materials and should be placed under recall.”
NHTSA complaint #10597226, filed 2014-06, 60,000 miles“The dash board is melting. It is sticky and there's seems to be nothing to do about it. I checked on recalls for the dash, but did not find any. I have had cars here is south florida for 40 something years....never had a problem like this. Why is it not recalled?”

Owners report the airbag warning light illuminating or flashing, sometimes returning after a recall inflator replacement or after a dealer cleaned or replaced a connector or airbag module. Some complaints describe high resistance in the side airbag wiring being diagnosed and repairs that did not resolve the light. Others describe long waits for recall parts. Reported across a wide range, from about 16,000 to 165,000 miles, with several cases shortly after recall service.

Owners describe the security alarm triggering repeatedly while parked, sometimes draining the battery, and dealers tracing it to door latch switches or door actuators. Other complaints describe a door that would not latch because the latch mounting screws were missing, or a door that popped open while driving. Repairs were often paid for out of pocket once warranty expired. Mostly reported between about 40,000 and 155,000 miles.

What to check: Open and close each door several times to confirm it latches firmly, and ask whether the door latch recall and any latch or actuator repairs were done.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“My car alarm kept going off several times a day for months for no reason. I brought it into the dealership and they found that I had a bad door latch. Could have been a safety issue if door could have come open while driving. Warranty was up so I had to pay all costs to replace.”
NHTSA complaint #10544489, filed 2013-09, 41,900 miles“For the last year, the car alarm in my 2009 Mazda 6 has been going off sporadically by itself at all hours of the day while parked in my apartment building parking lot. The dealer diagnosed that my passenger side door actuator needed to be replaced. It was, and a few weeks later the alarm went off again at 3:30 am, waking up all of my neighbors in the process. Brought it back to the dealer and now they say it's the driver side door actuator. …”

- 2 mention a crash, fire or injury
- owner-quoted repair $1,800 (median of 9 quotes)

Complaints describe the steering wheel rotating off-center, the car veering or pulling to one side, and unusual noises while turning, sometimes traced to fractured rack-and-pinion mounts or worn front-end parts. In several cases the diagnosis involved corroded subframe or suspension components rather than the steering gear itself. Usually reported from about 65,000 miles upward, often after several winters of road-salt exposure.
What to check: Drive on a straight flat road and confirm the wheel is centered, listen for clunks or squeaks when turning, and have an alignment checked before purchase.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“I was driving to a medical appt on local roads when I noticed a thumping sound from the front left, as if the tire were going flat. I stopped and inspected the tire and found no problems, so I continued on to the appt less than a mile away. Leaving the appt I felt the car suddenly pulling sharply to the right, and the dsc-off light came on. Turning right caused a loud squeaking noise. I drove immediately to a Mazda dealership that was fortunately only a mile or so away. …”

Buying note. Look closely at the dashboard surface and have the subframes inspected on a lift, since both are frequent and costly on this model year. Ask for recall completion records, including the front subframe and airbag campaigns, before agreeing on a price.
Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? NHTSA recorded 386 consumer complaints for the 2009 Mazda MAZDA6. 248 of the complaints include a mileage, and 24% of those were filed for vehicles with under 50,000 miles; the median is 80,856 miles. Of all complaints, 8 involved a crash, 3 a fire, 5 an injury, according to the filers. NHTSA lists 9 recall campaigns (4 marked do-not-drive) and 254 technical service bulletins for this model year. Compared with the other 9 Mazda MAZDA6 model years that have at least 25 complaints and are old enough to compare, this one scores 100 out of 100, where 50 is a typical year for the model (more complaints than typical for this model). The comparison allows for the era and for how long each year has had to collect complaints, but not for how many vehicles were sold.

The car is in otherwise good condition and has approximately 65k miles.”
