“1999 Mercedes-Benz e320t, 60k miles - crankshaft harmonic balancer (damper pulley) failed. Advised by mechanic to replace immediately, so as to avoid loss of multi ribbed-v-belt and concurrent loss of power steering, alternator and water pump function.”
NHTSA complaint #10060198, filed 2004-03, 60,530 miles“While making a left turn, the steering failed. The consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to a repair shop. The mechanic determined that the left arm seal on the rack and pinion steering needed to be replaced due to a worn out part. It was determined that there was a problem during the new vehicle warranty that was apparently repaired by fox valley mercedes. The consumer could not control the vehicle with all his strength. The technician determined that the left arm of the rack had a spontaneous seal failure, rendering the vehicle unsteerable and not controllable.”
