“I am having a difficult time moving my steering wheel on my 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis. It started with some noisy operation of the steering wheel. Once I can get the steering wheel to move the car doesn't want to turn. I am a afraid to drive it on the road.”
NHTSA complaint #11076061, filed 2018-03, 180,000 miles“Steering was tight and as I turned the wheel, the steering became loose. I took the vehicle to my mechanic and he told me that the steering shaft assembly had to be replaced because of rust. He also told me that I was close to having a full steering collapse. I now know that this was a recall item on the 2005 - 2011 Mercury Grand Marquis. Why wasn't the 2004 vehicle included?”
NHTSA complaint #10606297, filed 2014-06, 77,083 miles“While driving steering locked up and became hard to steer, luckily I was driving the car and not my wife, she would not have been able to steer car. Mechanic looked at and said it doesn't appear to be the power steering pump. Looks like steering shaft. Mechanic said he's seen this in ford and Mercury, said they have had recalls on this problem. Called ford, said no recall for 2004, yet 2005 and 2006 have been recalled for steering shaft problems.”
NHTSA complaint #10933968, filed 2016-12, 200,000 miles“After being idle for approximately one week, and driving the car from the driveway, the steering wheel became very loose as if the steering wheel was going to fall off. There is a clicking noise made as you turned the steering wheel and the wheels do turn on the car. We had the car towed to a ford dealership to have the car inspected and possibly repaired. We do live in a snowbelt area with lots of salt on the roads. …”
NHTSA complaint #10615562, filed 2014-07, 56,000 miles“I am having a difficult time moving my steering wheel on my 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis. It started with some noisy operation of the steering wheel. Once I can get the steering wheel to move the car doesn't want to turn. I am a afraid to drive it on the road. From what I have read there is a issue with a component of the steering system and your department is investigating it. I had a 2009 Mercury Grand Marquis that a steering part recalled.”
