1988: “My air conditioning won't work, my steering is a problem, when I hit the gas pedal once and then let go of it, my steering wheel moves back to its original positon. My valve cover gasket leaks so bad that it smokes. I put 3 quarts in it to go about 20 miles and that really sucks.”

NHTSA complaint #10070262, filed 2004-01, 214,000 miles

1994: “My daughter is currently driving a 1994 Mercury Topaz gs that I have registered with ford motor. Last week she experienced a front wheel on fire as a result of an overheating brake. The brake was repaired and it was found that the splash sheild that is next to the rotor was made of a plastic type composite that overheated and burst into flame. This could have caused a burned tire and subsequent blowout and accident. I believe this is a safety defect.”

NHTSA complaint #10078539, filed 2004-06, 83,800 miles

1993: “There is a speed control issue. Intermittently, the car will become locked at 2 RPM while still accelerating to 65+ MPH. The driving is non-specific; I could be idling, on the freeway or on surface streets. Although I remove my foot from the accelerator, the car continues to speed up. Immediately turning off the engine does not eliminate the issue either. Once the car is turned on again, it locks at 4 RPM while in park. The issue may take up to 30mins to subside. Luckily, the brakes have yet to fail when the car voluntarily accelerates (although this does wear on the brakes like crazy).”
