Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“Twice, now, the driver side recliner mechanism let loose and my seat back went into full decline while I was driving! First was in june, 1997, and now in january, 1999. It really scared me and I wonder if this is a common problem. I drive fairly conservatively, I am not obese, I alway use lap/shoulder belts. The thought of possibly losing control at high speed makes me want to ask for a permanent lock on the seat, although I do change the position every so often for comfort. Luckily, I am the primary driver. My wife fears to drive the van. …”

NHTSA complaint #702493, filed 1999-01

“The seat back recliner bolt broke. While driving in a snow storm the driver's seat back collapsed. The consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle and pulled it onto the side of the road. The vehicel was taken to the deaer who informed the consumer that the repairs were not covered under warranty.”
