“Frame rust. The frame on my 2004 Toyota 4r 4d 4x4 sr5/spt has completely rusted under the radiator cross member. Upon further inspection the entire inside of the frame is rusting to the outside in various locations. This will quickly become a safety concern since everything is bolted to the frame. My vehicle had less than 100k miles when the rust was discovered.”

NHTSA complaint #11253740, filed 2019-09, 95,000 miles

“The frame of my 2004 4RUNNER has holes perforated through the frame. I purchased this vehicle new and have always serviced it through the Toyota dealer. It only has 86,000 miles on it, has been garage kept, and shouldn't be at the end of it's life as suggested by the Toyota service advisor. I am extremely disappointed in my Toyota vehicle.”

NHTSA complaint #10924079, filed 2016-11, 85,735 miles

“The frame of my truck is complete mush! I've taken excellent care of my 4RUNNER as it has been my most favorite vehicle. I'm being warned to get this fixed due to it being a dangerous situation & wouldn't you know I'm driving home & I loose all control over my vehicle on hellacious mountain roads, brakes completely gone! Everything rotten! Why weren't we notified how dangerous these trucks truly have become?”

NHTSA complaint #11191413, filed 2019-03, 194,000 miles

“2004 4 runner sport, frame rusting out everywhere, n ow front cross member under the radiator is completly rusted thru. This car has been well maintained, Toyota should be standing behind this problem. I had hoped this would be my last car to buy, now at 75 I must look for another vehicle. This car is in massachusett”

NHTSA complaint #10870827, filed 2016-05, 124,600 miles

“I own a 2004 Toyota 4RUNNER with significant rust on the frame that has nearly rusted through in some areas. Through my research I determined that this has been an ongoing issue for many Toyota vehicles close to the 2004 model year. Apparently the frame was not properly coated and rust has grown on my vehicle as well as many others at a much faster rate than is typically expected. I am worried about the safety of my vehicle as a result.”
