Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“All four interior door handles have failed making it impossible to exit the car without rolling down the windows. This is potentially dangerous in case of emergency. The left rear was first to fail at ~100k miles, the driver handle failed last at 139k miles. The local dealer offered a 10% discount on the repair, Toyota of america customer satisfaction would offer anything better.”

NHTSA complaint #10269779, filed 2009-05, 139,000 miles

“The drivers side door on the consumer's 1996 Camry could not be opened from the inside nor the outside because the spring in the door lock assembly broke. A new door lock assembly was install by the dealer at the consumer's expense.”

NHTSA complaint #10154143, filed 2006-03, 84,320 miles

“Power door locks engage to locking position independently and often continually while vehicle is in motion. Was taken to Toyota dealer a minimum of two times to be repaired. Dealer detected a low voltage problem and replaced battery. Door locks continue to self lock. Dealer unable to get door locks to self initiate therefore diagnostic equipment unable to detect problem. Dealer unwilling to do any more for owner. Vehicle continues to engage locking mechanism while in use. Transporting children is potentially dangerous if mechanism locks child/children inside.”

NHTSA complaint #712169, filed 1999-09

“The hood on the vehicle will not stay in the open position. Intermittently, it will come down without being shut by anyone. Vehicle not taken to a mechanic.”
