“2002 Toyota sequioa 4wd. Check engine light, vsc off, vcs trac lights are all on and vehicle is nearly impossible to drive in the rain. After checking with multiple sources online and by phone, it appears the skid control ecu with actuator is the problem and this part runs over $2000 dollars! I understand repairs come with the territory, but when there are literally thousands of these sequioas with the exact same problem, I just assumed there would be a recall. Not so according to Toyota. They deem it a rare occurence and a customers problem if no longer under warranty. …”

NHTSA complaint #10286869, filed 2009-10, 152,000 miles

“In 8/06 I noticed a roaring/grinding noise coming from my end. L. Bearing replaced x2. Problem remained. Then replaced the right front bearing. Still to no avail. I then took my car to Toyota in tampa who stated the replaced bearing had been pressed in too tight. I took my car back to the mechanic who then took the entire assembly over Toyota in clearwater to replace the entire assembly. Still no resolution. Tire problem? So, I took it back to the tire kingdom who put on new michelin cross terrain SUV tires. Problem remained. …”

NHTSA complaint #10169511, filed 2006-09, 77,000 miles

“My 2002 Toyota Sequoia is emitting a foul, rotten egg, sulfurous smell from the exhaust. My vehice only has 2000 miles on it and the catalytic converter has been replaced once. I cotacted the manufacturer and was told that the smell is a bi-product of the sulfur in the fuel not being completely burned in the converter. I was asked to use higher octane fuel and that did not solve the problem. The manufacturer is telling the dealer that they are aware of the situation and they are investigating it. I did notice the smell on other sequoias.”

NHTSA complaint #10005875, filed 2003-02, 500 miles

“Dt: consumer says vehicle stalls without warning. Consumer was driving last thursday when the vehicle stalled. Also, vehicle stalled six times this morning when consumer was taking it to garage. Sometimes it starts missing, and one can push the gas pedal and vehicle will continue on with out stalling.”

NHTSA complaint #10125277, filed 2005-06, 11,000 miles

“(1) grinding noise on acceleration. Engine cutting off when stopping vehicle. (2) stuck in middle or road trying to get truck to stay cranked. (3) replaced transmission at 1/2 dealer cost and 1/2 my cost when complaint started on problem while vehicle was still under warranty.”
