“In an effort to make this as short as possible, I bought 4 new continental contiproco tires in june 2009 for a 99 vw Passat. After driving less than 7k miles, while traveling in the middle lane of a major highway about 65 MPH the right rear tire separated into 3 pieces. I did not hit anything that I know of and pulled off the road immediately. It was similar to a truck retread tire that separates and you see on the road all the time. Continental will replace the tire but quite honestly I don?t trust their products at this time. If this occurred on a front tire, I would have rolled over.”
NHTSA complaint #10292073, filed 2009-11, 7,000 miles“During an emergancy braking procedure the ABS system did not work. I attempted to stop from highway speeds, the tires locked up, and the ABS/ brake light came on and then went out seconds later. But the front tire locked up when I needed the ABS to work. The light now comes on and off at will. The brake pads front and rear have been changed, and the brake fluid changed to fix the problem with no luck. The light tends to come on once the engine is warm but I no longer trust the ABS to work even if the light is off.”
NHTSA complaint #10104824, filed 2004-12, 64,000 miles“1) while I was driving in the highway I-10 at the speed of 50 miles/hour, the car is shaking and then after a minutes. 2) the passenger rear tire blowed out and hits a hole in the car. At the same time, rear bumper was damaged. 3) I had to change the tire in the highway and due to safety concerns, I changed all 4 tires manufactured by bridgestone. …”
NHTSA complaint #10205630, filed 2007-10“While driving, right rear tire blew out. The well lining between the tire and the fuel tank for cusion purpose was observed to be bended around the top portion of the tire. Pieces of tire hit fuel tank and caused a fuel leak which may have resulted in a fire. ( DOT number: m3ta cxyx tire size: 15 )”
NHTSA complaint #724857, filed 2000-07“Tire blew out while traveling on freeway. No road hazards observed. When tire blew out it cut into the wheel well lining and then cut into the side wall of the fuel tank, rupturing the tank and causing a fuel spill onto the hot tire and wheel.
